The Trojans got 10 kills from Abigail Mullen in a loss to the Boilermakers

LOS ANGELES – The 17th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (10-4, 1-3 Big Ten) fell in straight sets (25-23, 25-18, 25-21) to No. 13 Purdue (12-2, 3-1) at Galen Center on Saturday, Oct. 4.

KEY PLAYERS

Fr. OPP Abigail Mullen collected 10 kills (3e, 22att) and hit .318 to go with five digs and three blocks (two solo).
So. MB Mia Tvrdy had nine kills (5e, 20att, .200) and added a pair of blocks (one solo).
RS So. OH London Wijay led the team with 12 digs and had eight kills (1e, 28att, .250).
Fr. S Reese Messer dished out 30 assists with four digs and had one kill.
Sr. MB Rylie McGinest tallied five kills and had a block.
For the Boilermakers, Kenna Wollard had 16 kills to go with three blocks. Grace Heaney put up 12 kills with seven digs and had four blocks (three solo). Akasha Anderson scored on 10 kills and had a pair of blocks. Taylor Anderson put up 32 assists with five kills and four digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mullen collected five of her kills in the opening frame and had the Trojans hitting .222 with 13 kills (5e) on 36 swings. Purdue had 16 kills and hit .263 to close out a 25-23 win in set one. Purdue led by as many as five twice, but the Trojans closed to within a point at 22-21, and 23-22, before the Boilermakers closed out the win.
Heaney came alive in set two for six kills and led the Boilermakers to a big 25-18 win. Purdue put up five blocks and had a 22-14 edge in digs to hold USC to a .122 hitting rate (12k, 6e) on 49 swings. The score was tied 12 times in set three, but Purdue took the final lead at 17-16 and never looked back.
Wollard had the hot hand in the third and had six of Purdue's 15 kills while Heaney added four more. USC hit .171 with 12 kills and led by as many as three before the Boilermakers flipped the scoreboard to take a 25-21 win to seal the sweep. Wijay had four kills and picked up five more digs in the third set.

UP NEXT

USC remains home to host Oregon on Thursday (Oct. 9) next week at Galen Center and then travels across town to take on UCLA on Saturday (Oct. 11). The Trojans and Ducks will be shown live on FS1 and the USC-UCLA match will be shown on NBC—both to national audiences.

MATCH NOTES

USC fell to 6-2 all-time against Purdue and has lost the last two meetings.
The Trojans fell to 7-2 in home matches this season.
