PALO ALTO, Calif. – The USC women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 1 Stanford, 2-1 on the road.
After giving up two goals in the first half, USC made a game of it with a goal in the second half, but couldn't come all the way back against the Cardinal. The Trojans fall to 4-1-1 with the loss, while Stanford moves to 7-0-0. The defeat was USC's first against the Cardinal since 2019, snapping a four-game unbeaten streak.
Stanford scored in the 6th and 42nd minutes to take a 2-0 advantage into the break. The Trojans came back and put the pressure on early in the second half, getting an own goal off a Stanford player in the 49th minute. Helena Sampaio played a ball forward to Kayla Colbert in the box and Colbert sent a dangerous cross to a streaking Simone Jackson that was knocked in by a Stanford defender.
After having no shots on goal in the first half, the Trojans put four balls on target in the second half and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks in the final 45 minutes as well.
