USC Women’s Basketball Locks In Home-and-Home Series with Notre Dame
July 12, 2024 | Women's Basketball
Women of Troy will host the Fighting Irish on Nov. 23 at Galen Center.
A storied rivalry hits the hard court this year with USC women's basketball set up to begin a home-and-home series with Notre Dame. Both teams are anchored by returning All-American talent, with the Women of Troy lined up to host the Fighting Irish on Nov. 23, 2024 at Galen Center before returning the favor with a visit to South Bend in the 2025-26 season.
"USC-Notre Dame has been a meaningful matchup in college sports for decades," USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "But this particular series in women's basketball at this point in time is one that I think will bring so much excitement. I'm glad that our fans get to see this marquee matchup in Galen this season. What a showcase of the talent in our game and the level our sport has reached. I'm thrilled to bring this matchup to LA."
USC's 2024 clash with Notre Dame marks the first meeting between the two programs since 2011 and the first clash at Galen Center since 2006. That Los Angeles meeting saw the Trojans top the Fighting Irish 69-58, marking the second-ever USC win in the series that dates back to the 1984-85 season, when the Trojans posted a 69-53 victory. Notre Dame has won the other eight meetings in the rivalry.
Notre Dame is coming off a 2023-24 season that included an ACC Tournament Championship and a run to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. The Fighting Irish finished the season ranked No. 11 in the nation
Gottlieb's USC women posted a powerful 2023-24 campaign that saw the Women of Troy earn the program's first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament since 1986 and make a historic run to the 2024 NCAA Elite Eight, winning the Pac-12 Tournament championship along the way. Ranked No. 3 in the nation entering the 2024 NCAA Tournament, the Trojans achieved their highest national ranking since standing at No. 3 in the final AP poll of 1986. USC finished off the season ranked No. 5 in the final AP poll.
Grad transfers Kiki Iriafen and Talia Von Oelhoffen join fellow All-Pac-12 honorees Rayah Marshall and JuJu Watkins for a 2024-25 Trojan team that also boasts the top-ranked freshman class in the nation in Rian Forestier, Kayleigh Heckel, Avery Howell, Vivian Iwuchukwu, Brooklyn Shamblin, Kennedy Smith and Laura Williams. The USC women are looking to increase the momentum built in their 29-6 record and Elite Eight run last season, when Gottlieb was named a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year Award and Watkins was selected a Naismith finalist as well as the winner of National Freshman of the Year awards.
