MARINA DEL RAY, CALIF. – The No. 16 USC women's rowing team defeated UCLA and LMU in the first scored match of the season on Saturday, Mar. 16, at the UCLA Boathouse in Marina Del Ray. The Trojans won two categories, receiving three and a half points, while the Bruins received three, and the Lions zero.
WHAT HAPPENED
- The Second Varsity Four kicked off the rainy morning for the Trojans. Coxswain Sophie Wojcik guided USC to a third-place finish. The Trojans came in at 8:02.96, 16 seconds behind UCLA's four, with their time being 7:46.7.
- The Third Varsity Eight was next on the water for the Trojans. Mid-year transfer Sophia Cabrera had her USC debut, leading the women of troy to first place with a time of 6:40.9, putting the Trojans on the board first with .5 points. The Bruins were five seconds behind with a time of 6:46.2.
- The Varsity Four, led by coxswain Sage Saperstein, came just short of UCLA, finishing in second place at 6:49.17. USC was half a second behind UCLA, with UCLA's time being 6:48.6, giving the Bruins a lead of 1-.5.
- The Second Varsity Eight placed second behind UCLA, with the Trojans finishing at 5:50.63. USC finished a second behind UCLA with the Bruin's crossing at 5:49.7. That put the Trojans down 3-.5, setting the stage for the Varsity Eight to decide the meet.
- USC's Varsity Eight lined up against UCLA, down two points but the Trojans pulled it off, finishing first with a time of 5:46.3, beating the Bruins by almost two seconds.
- Fr. Ellen Ariathurai coxed for the Trojan's Second Varsity 8+. Grace Eamer sat the stroke seat for the Trojans. Bella Korellis, Julia Karten, Anna Molnar, Celia Marino, Chloe Amling, and Chiara Meakin, followed by Isabella Lysaker, succeeded in the stroke seat.
- Sr. Eden Cooper-Squires coxed for the Varsity 8+. In the stroke seat was Grete Alttoa. Following Alttoa were Zoe McCutcheon, Annabel Aron, Ingrid Brast, Clare Widzgowski, Amy Clare Naughton, Anastasiia Slivina, and in the bow was Raquel Rodriguez. Â
- So. Sofia Cabrera coxed for the Trojan's Third Varsity 8+. Michaela Banta sat the stroke seat for the Trojans. Sara Clarin, Rhese Abrams, Evita Franckevica, Martina Scarpello, Meave Clifford, Regan Mary Cronin, and Tala Ransweiler succeeded in the stroke seat.
- So. Sage Saperstein coxed for the Varsity Four. Kiki George, Szonja Balazs, and Abbie Diemer filled the boat with Alex DeLisle in the bow seat.Â
- Fr. Sophie Wojcik coxed for the Second Varsity Four. Lauren Donnelly, Julia Kennedy, and Franchesca Moore sat in the Trojan Boat with Belle Bordier in the bow seat.Â
