USC Women’s Basketball Scores Top Seed For March Madness!
March 17, 2024 | Women's Basketball
It’s the first NCAA No. 1 seed for the Women of Troy since 1986.
As it grips its highest national ranking since 1986, the No. 3 USC women's basketball team has also secured its first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament since 1986 as the Trojans set up to host First and Second Round action at Galen Center. Joining top-seeded USC (26-5) for NCAA competition in Los Angeles this week are No. 16 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (23-8), [8] Kansas (19-12) and [9] Michigan (20-13). Dates and times for games will be released by the NCAA later.
With head coach Lindsay Gottlieb at the helm for her third season with the Women of Troy, USC is making back-to-back NCAA appearances for the first time since 2006. Named a semifinalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year award, Gottlieb has the program in a prime position to make a deep run in March Madness. Led by ESPN's National Player of the Year Runner-Up, freshman JuJu Watkins, USC has a powerful blend of talent that has combined forces to propel the Trojans to 26 wins — most since 1994 — and most recently to the Pac-12 Tournament Championship, where grad student McKenzie Forbes was named the Pac-12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player. USC has recorded five wins over top-10 opponents this season — the most such victories since the 1984-85 campaign — including two each over No. 2 seeds Stanford and UCLA and one over No. 2 seeded Ohio State.
• USC is 29-15 in the NCAA Tournament, with two NCAA title victories (1983 and 1984).
• This is the Trojans' 18th trip to the NCAA Tournament.
• USC's No. 1 seed in 2024 is its fifth top seed all-time, last earned in 1986.
• USC has won two previous NCAA Championship (1983 and 1984).
• USC is one of seven Pac-12 teams in this year's NCAA 68-team field bracket.
• USC's is making back-to-back NCAA appearances for the first time since 2006.
• USC was a No. 8 seed in the 2023 NCAA tourney, falling in the first round to South Dakota State in overtime 62-57 in Blacksburg, Va.
• The last time USC earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament was 2014 after winning USC's first Pac-12 Tournament championship.
• Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb has led three different programs to the NCAA Tournament — UC Santa Barbara (2009), California (seven appearances in eight seasons) and USC (2023 and 2024).
• USC has played nine other teams in the 68-team field of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, posting a 13-4 record against those opponents this season (2-0 against No. 2 seed Stanford; 1-1 vs. No. 5 seed Colorado, 2-1 vs. No. 2 seed UCLA, 2-0 vs. No. 3 seed Oregon State, 0-2 vs. No. 5 seed Utah, 3-0 vs. No. 11 seed Arizona, 1-0 vs. No. 2 seed Ohio State, 1-0 vs. No. 12 seed FGCU, 1-0 vs. No. 13 seed UC Irvine).
