USC Baseball Takes Series With Wild 11-8 in Finale at Stanford
March 17, 2024 | Baseball
The Trojans erased deficits twice on the afternoon and took the lead in the eighth to move to 6-13 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 play. Stanford falls to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 play. USC won the opener and then dropped the Saturday contest before taking the finale in what was the last series as Pac-12 foes between the two long-time conference rivals.
It was a clutch eighth inning that put the Trojans in front for good. Abbrie Covarrubias scored on a Stanford error to break a 5-5 tie, and then Carson Wells tripled home two runs and was brought home on another triple by Brayden Dowd. Jacob Galloway hit a two-run homer in the ninth that ended up being crucial because Stanford would score three in the bottom of the ninth.
A wild seventh inning is where the Trojans tied it. Stanford committed three errors in that inning, allowing two USC runs to score. The Trojans nearly had the go-ahead run in the seventh, but had a runner thrown out at home and Stanford left fielder Colt McDonald made a diving catch with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Stanford jumped in front with two runs in the second inning and then one in the third. Jared Feikes came out of the bullpen with one out and the bases loaded in the third, allowing just a sac fly before getting a groundout to end the inning. Feikes would toss 3.0 innings and give up just one run.
USC came right back the very next half inning, getting three runs in the top of the fourth to tie things up. KaiKea Harrison had an RBI groundout, Covarrubias singled home a run and Austin Overn had an RBI double.
The Trojans won the series against Stanford last year as well, marking the first time since 2015 that USC has beaten the Cardinal in back-to-back years. It was also USC's first road series win at Stanford since 2014.
