USC’s JuJu Watkins Sweeps Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Weekly Awards For Third Time
February 19, 2024 | Women's Basketball
She’s the Pac-12 Player and Freshman of the Week after helping USC to three wins in the past week.
Freshman guard JuJu Watkins continues to ink her name amongst the game's best, now standing as the first USC women's basketball player since Tina Thompson to be selected conference player of the week three times in a single season. Watkins has collected her third sweep of the Pac-12's weekly awards year, named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the third time and Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the 13th time after helping her Trojans to three wins in the last week to get to 20 wins on the season. Also this week, Watkins picked up her third selection as USBWA Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week, and USC was selected as the ESPN Team of the Week.
Now riding a six-game win streak and ranked No. 7 in the nation, USC is coming off victories over Arizona (81-64), Oregon (88-51) and then-No. 11 Oregon State (58-50). Watkins was USC's top scorer in all three contests, helping USC to complete its first road sweep of the Oregon schools since 2012-13.
With 32 points against Arizona and 33 at Oregon, Watkins recorded her ninth and 10th games of the season with 30 or more points — tying the USC record set by Cheryl Miller in 1984-85. Watkins has led USC in scoring in 22 of the 23 games she's played this season, and she now ranks No. 10 all-time in single-season scoring at USC with 633 points — passing past single-season efforts from Cynthia Cooper (1985-86), Tina Thompson (1995-96), Paula McGee (1982-83) and Lisa Leslie (1996-97).
USC collected a season-high 51 rebounds in the win at Oregon State, with Watkins hauling in 11 of those to go along with 18 points to record her fifth double-double of the season.
Watkins and the Women of Troy are back in Los Angeles this week for their final Pac-12 home games of the season, setting up for rematches against No. 11 Colorado and No. 18 Utah at Galen Center. The Trojans host the Buffs at 7 p.m on Friday (Feb. 23) before taking on the Utes at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 25). USC will celebrate its six graduating Women of Troy at Sunday's game, honoring Kaitlyn Davis, McKenzie Forbes, Roxane Makolo, India Otto, Kayla Padilla and Kayla Williams.
