USC Lacrosse's Ella Heaney, Kate Gerrity Sweep the First Pac-12 Weekly Awards
February 13, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
Heaney accumulated nine goals and two assists, while Gerrity secured four caused turnovers and two ground balls in the two-game sweep on the East Coast
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse graduate student attacker Ella Heaney (Garden City, N.Y.) was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, and sophomore midfielder Kate Gerrity (San Francisco) was chosen for the Defensive Player of the Week award for the week of Feb. 5-11, the league announced on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
Heaney racked up the stats while posting new career milestones as the Women of Troy took down both No. 15 Army and Villanova on the road. The graduate student posted a new career-high for goals as she put together a six-goal outing against the Black Knights in the 13-9 victory. Heaney's second goal of the first game put her in elite company, as she became the eighth player in USC history to accumulate 100 career goals. She added to her weekend as she put together another hat trick in the win over Villanova, as she accumulated nine total goals and two assists over the weekend. This is Heaney's second career weekly honor from the conference, as she won it back on Feb. 21, 2023.
On the defensive side, Gerrity was a force in her first two career starts for USC. She helped propel the Trojans in the first game, as she was a centerpiece in holding Army to less than ten goals and only allowed two goals in the fourth quarter. The sophomore forced two crucial turnovers and picked up three ground balls in USC's first road win against an IWLCA-ranked opponent since April 3, 2022. Gerrity further added to her weekend as she forced two more turnovers and picked up one more ground ball. The sophomore ended her weekend with four ground balls and four caused turnovers, as the Trojans started the season undefeated after their first road trip. This is Gerrity's first weekly honor from the conference.
The Pac-12 is in its seventh season of women's lacrosse. The Women of Troy have earned weekly conference honors 37 times (26 defensive and 11 offensive) to rank first among league schools. Colorado sits second with 29 awards. Stanford currently has 27, and Arizona State follows that with 23. Oregon (5) and California (2) round out the group. This is the ninth time that USC has swept the Pac-13 weekly awards and first time since March 7, 2023.
USC (2-0) hosts its first home game this weekend. It welcomes Hofstra to SoCal with a noon game on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Health Dignity Sports Park in Carson, Calif.
