November 05, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
The Trojan All-American opposite hitter amassed 4,521 points during the league’s five-week run in Arizona
MESA, Ariz. – USC women's volleyball All-American opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie (2014-17, Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) won the 2024 Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball Championship on Monday, Nov. 4.Â
Â
The former Trojan was crowned the 2024 champion after she earned 4,521 leaderboard points during the five-week season in which she took the court alongside 43 of the world's best volleyball players at Arizona Athletic Grounds.
Â
"This is amazing," said Abercrombie said, "To be honest, I really didn't expect this when I joined the league. I just want to thank everyone who was involved, especially my teammates. I can't wait to celebrate."
Â
"Congratulations to Brittany Abercrombie, Morgan Hentz, Molly McCage and Taylor Bruns Tegenrot," said Cassidy Lichtman, Director of Volleyball for AU. "We are so thankful to the city and fans in Mesa for being incredible hosts, and to our partners ESPN, FanDuel Sports Network and Volleyball World for ensuring our fans around the world had widespread access to our most competitive season yet."
Â
Among other award winners, Stanford grad Morgan Hentz claimed her third straight AU Pro Defensive Player of the Year Award; South Carolina's Taylor Bruns Tegenrot was chosen as the Teammate of the Year and Texas' Molly McCage repeated as the AU Pro Blocker of the Year. Abercrombie, Hentz and McCage were joined on the All-Position Team by Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía, Tori Dixon, Madi Kingdon Rishel, Manami Kojima and Natalia Valentin-Anderson. De La Cruz-Mejia finished in second place on the leaderboard, while Kingdon Rishel and Hentz followed in third and fourth place, respectively, to earn medalist honors.
Â
Abercrombie's victory follows those of outside hitters Leah Edmond (2023), De La Cruz-Mejía (2022) and Jordan Larson (2021). To commemorate the victory, Abercrombie receives a medal designed and hand-fabricated by Lisa Issenberg, founder of Kiitellä; a Finnish word meaning "to thank, applaud or praise." Athletes Unlimited will also commission a special portrait of Abercrombie for its Champions Collection, which features emerging artists whose work and approach speaks to the mission and values of the organization. The portrait will be created by Selina A. Scott, an Indigenous (Diné Navajo) and Mexican artist who grew up in Tempe and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drawing from Arizona State University.
Â
As the first non-outside hitter to win the league title, Abercrombie held the top spot on the leaderboard after 11 of 15 match days, including the final 10 days in a row. She set a new league record with 2,020 win points and paced the league in both stat points (2,001) and MVP points (500). Abercrombie—who tallied 10 or more kills in all 15 matches—authored a league-record 13 match victories and opened the season with an 11-match win streak. A four-time team captain, she led her teams to a 10-2 record, including a perfect 3-0 mark in weeks two and three. Abercrombie collected match MVP honors in 11-of-15 contests, which led the league and rank third on the league's all-time single-season list. She opened the season by earning Match MVP notice in seven straight matches, including five consecutive MVP 1 certificates from October 7-18.
