USC Men’s Basketball Routs Chattanooga 77-51 During Season Opener
November 04, 2024 | Men's Basketball
Trojans open the season with a victory at the Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES – The USC men's basketball team opened the 2024-25 campaign victorious on Monday evening, downing the Chattanooga Mocs 77-51 at the Galen Center.
It was a strong team statement for USC, debuting an almost-entirely new squad in the first regular season game under first-year USC head coach Eric Musselman. With preseason standout Terrance Williams out, the Trojan contingent's contribution from across the rotation carried USC to victory.
"I thought we played super hard," Musselman said after the game. "I'm super proud of 21 assists for a team that's been put together on the fly, so to speak, and a team that has so many new players."
Graduate guard Chibuzo Agbo led the way for the Trojans, scoring 14 points and shooting 4-9 from three-point range. He was joined in double digits by graduate forward Matt Knowling, who posted a massive game from the bench, scoring 13 while shooting 100 percent from the field.
It was a team effort for the Trojans, who shot a collective 50 percent from the field and tallied 21 assists. The Trojan bench also had a strong showing, scoring 41 of the team's 77 points. USC also turned in a strong defensive performance, holding the Mocs to just 27.8 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from three.
The team got off to a slow start in the first half, with graduate forward Saint Thomas scoring the team's first home basket from beyond the arc. The Trojans battled hard to end the first half with a ten-point lead. Troy's offense exploded in the second half, outscoring Chattanooga by sixteen points.
In addition to having two players in double digits, four Trojans scored eight or more points, including both Thomas and junior guard Desmond Claude with nine a piece. Freshman guard Isaiah Elohim and sophomore guard Wesley Yates III both shined in their first collegiate games, scoring eight and nine respectively off the bench.
The Trojans will return to the court Thursday night when they host Idaho State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
