USC Rowing Records Strong Finishes At Head of the American

Women of Troy engaged in their first competition of 2024-25 up at Lake Natoma.
LAKE NATOMA, CALIF. — USC women's rowing hit the water at Lake Natoma for the team's first competition of 2024-25, and first under the leadership of head coach Kelsie Chaudoin and her coaching staff. The Women of Troy had a number of boats entered for action at the Head of the American in Gold River, Calif., today, and USC saw strong performances across the board.
"The team took a solid first step today, executing much of what we've been focusing on this fall from both a technical and tactical racing standpoint, and it was exciting to mix it up with crews from all over the West Coast," Chaudoin said. "We used the pairs results from this morning to determine our Eights lineups on the fly, and I'm very proud of how they embraced the challenge and found a way to race aggressively down the course in newly formed lineups."
The day began with pairs racing, offering the first collegiate competition of the day. Top finishers from the Trojan contingent of eight boats were Louise Gyssels and Gerli Endrekson, who took second place. Three other USC pairs notched top-10 finishes in the race that featured 44 boats — sixth-place Chloe Amling and Solange Barbier; eighth-place Annabel Aron and Raquel Rodriguez; and 10th-place Francesca Garijo and Olivia Aceves. USC was up against boats from Oregon State, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Portland, San Diego and Washington State in the pairs race.
Next to launch were the Varsity Eight boats, with four Trojan boats in the mix. Leading the pack in that race were USC's First Varsity Eight with a fifth-place finish, and the Second Varsity Eight in eighth place. All four boats finished top-20 in a race of 34 total boats. Other programs with Varsity Eight boats competing today were Cal Poly Pomona, Oregon State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, Portland, San Diego and Washington State.
The last race of the event for the Women of Troy was the Collegiate 4+, which featured three USC boats in a 17-boat race. USC's First Varsity Four and Third Varsity Four clocked in just two seconds apart, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Also competing in this one were boats representing Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State, Oregon State, Sonoma State, UC Berkeley, San Diego and Washington State.
"Shoutout also to the Varsity Fours athletes for digging deep — they literally ran from their Eights to their Fours after hitting the dock, making it back to the start in time for the Varsity Four race" Chaudoin said. "We're excited to get back to work and keep learning, finding more speed and continuing building a strong foundation for the future."
In all, 42 Trojans hit the water at the Head of the American, including 21 true freshmen who made their USC debuts today.
USC lineups and results from the Head of the American are listed below.
NEXT: With this fall competition complete, USC will turn to preparation for spring competition, which starts up in March 2025.
