USC’s JuJu Watkins Scores Seventh Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week Selection
January 02, 2024 | Women's Basketball
She pinned up a game-high 27 points with a double-double in USC’s battle at No. 2 UCLA.
In her first eight weeks in the conference, USC women's basketball freshman JuJu Watkins has now scored seven Pac-12 Freshman of the Week awards. The only week she missed the honor was a week off of competition for the Trojans, who currently rank No. 9 in the national AP poll.
Watkins' latest Pac-12 accolades come after USC and UCLA tangled in the first-ever meeting where both rivals entered the game undefeated. Ranked No. 6 and No. 2 respectively, USC and UCLA's conference opener marked the first time since 1981 that the rivals had faced each other while ranked in the AP top 10. In an all-out battle in Westwood, it was UCLA that got the win, although Watkins was a driving force for the Trojans throughout the game.
Watkins finished her first face-off with the Bruins with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds, notching her second career double-double with the Trojans, while also serving up a career-high three blocks. Watkins has now led USC in scoring in every game she's played as a Trojan. Now with seven Pac-12 Freshman of the Week awards, Watkins is closing in on the Pac-12 record of eight such honors claimed in a season.
Watkins and the Women of Troy are back at Galen Center for the next two weeks for more Pac-12 play. USC hosts Oregon State at 7 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 5) and then faces Oregon at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 7). The following week, USC hosts the crosstown showdown with UCLA at 2 p.m. on Dec. 14.
