No. 4/15 USC Swimming Wins Big, Trojan Diving Squad Sweeps First Day of Bruin Invite

USC swimming defeats UC San Diego and Utah.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 ranked USC women's swim team defeated both UC San Diego and Utah to remain unbeaten, while No. 15 USC men's swimming downed the Tritons to improve to 2-2 on Friday, Jan. 12 at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
The Women of Troy defeated UC San Diego 185-69, while simultaneously downing Pac-12 rival Utah 172.5-84.5. Troy beat the Tritons 187-72.
Across town at the Bruin Diving Invitational, USC swept Friday's competition, including two individual and two team event wins.
BRUIN INVITE DAY ONE:
Sophomore Laurent Gosselin-Paradis claimed the 3-meter competition with 734.65 total points (354.75 points from prelims). Junior Shangfei Wang was fourth with 716.85 points (358.90 points).
On the women's side, it was USC fifth-year Nike Agunbiade who won the 1-meter competition with 593.70 total points (287.25 points coming from prelims). Grace Lee was 12th with 512.80 points, while Farrah Volpintesta was 18th with 490.85 points.
USC won both 'team events' with Agunbiade, Lee and Volpintesta combining to win it for the women with 329.60 points, while Gref, Gosselin-Paradis and Wang won it for Troy with 374.20.
Action continues tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with men's platform and women's 3-meter prelims. Finals will begin at approximately 12:15 p.m.
SWIM RECAP:
USC opened the meet going 1-2 in both the women's and men's 200y medley relay as the Trojan A relays came out on top. On the women's side, Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Vasilissa Buinaia combined to clock a 1:40.73 and take the event. Troy's Vaggelis Makyrgiannis, Chris O'Grady, Michal Chmielewski and Artem Selin were first in 1:28.46.
In the 1000y freestyle, Trojan Claire Tuggle clocked a 9:56.52 to touch first by more than 15 seconds. Michal Chmielewski won it for the men in 9:28.73.
Michigan graduate transfer Sophia Kudryashova had her first event win of the season, leading a 1-2-3 Trojan finish in the 200y freestyle as she claimed the race in 1:49.76. Buinaia was second in 1:51.67, while junior Marlene Kahler was third in 1:52.16.
Troy also swept the 200y freestyle as Ben Dillard (1:37.81), Makyrgiannis (1:38.06) and Sanberk Oktar (1:40.51) finished 1-2-3, respectively.
Senior Famous won the 100y backstroke in 54.12, while Justina Kozan was second in 56.28. Kozan later claimed the 100y butterfly in 55.86.
Michal Chmielewski claimed his second individual event of the day with a victory in the 100y backstroke, touching in 48.52. His third individual event win came in the 100y butterfly as he clocked a 48.41.
Fifth year Dobler continued her dominance in the 100y breaststroke, clocking a 1:02.85 en route to a first-place finish. She also claimed the 200y breast in 2:17.17.
O'Grady won the 100y breast for Troy in 54.94 and was second the 200y breast in 1:59.34. Dillard claimed the 200y breast in 1:58.53.
Junior Genevieve Sasseville claimed the 200y butterfly in 2:02.63, while also leading a USC sweep; Tuggle was second in 2:05.03, followed by Alice Waldow in third in 2:05.05.
Trojan freshman Krzysztof Chmielewski was first in the 200y fly in 1:44.97, while senior Harry Homans was second in 1:50.12. Chmielewski later won the 500y freestyle in 4:23.37.
After claiming the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week award last weekend, Delgado followed it up with another pair of individual event wins on Friday, claiming both the 50y free (23.30) and 100y free (50.21).
Trojan Artem Selin followed suit, sweeping the sprint freestyle events – 50y free (20.17) and 100y free (44.69).
Waldow came out on top in the 200y back, posting a 1:59.87. Makyrgiannis won it for Troy in 1:46.98.
The Women of Troy swept the 500y freestyle as Tuggle (4:51.78), Kudryashova (4:56.51)., Kahler (4:59.82) and Macky Hodges (5:01.53) finished 1-2-3-4, respectively.
USC's freshmen dominated the 200y IM as Minna Abraham (2:03.53) and Sanberk Oktar (1:49.45) won their respective heats.
The Trojans wrapped up the session with wins in both the men's and women's 400y freestyle relays.
