USC Women's Volleyball's London Wijay Earns Repeat Pac-12 Freshman of the Week Honors

The Trojans’ outside hitter racked up a career-high 24 kills in USC’s win over crosstown rival UCLA
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball OH London Wijay (Porter Ranch, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Sept. 18-24, the Conference announced on Monday, Sept. 25.

Wijay becomes the first USC player to earn back-to-back Pac-12 Freshman of the Week awards since setter Raquel Lázaro did it in the opening weeks of the 2018 season. Wijay also joins a group of Trojans to have earned the Pac-12's freshman award more than once. Only Lázaro (4 in 2018), OH Ebony Nwanebu (6 in 2013), and OH Samantha Bricio (5 in 2012) have had multiple freshman of the week awards.

Wijay's second-career award is USC's 23rd all-time freshman honor. While freshman awards are not included as part of the total awards won by schools, USC has had 87 all-time weekly award winners. Since 2011, when the Pac-12 began honoring separate offensive and defensive players of the week and introduced a freshman award, Women of troy have earned 28 offensive awards, 13 defensive awards, and now 23 freshman honors.

Wijay was the Trojans' offensive catalyst in a key win over crosstown rival UCLA to open Pac-12 play. She posted her second of back-to-back double-doubles with 24 kills and 10 digs in the five-set road victory, her first crosstown rivalry match. Her 24 kills, 51 attacks and 26.5 points were each career-high marks. Later, Wijay hit .571 on just 14 swings to collect nine kills against Oregon State in a three-set sweep. Wijay finished the week ranked in the Pac-12's top 20 for kills per set (3.04 kps).

The Women of Troy (8-4, 2-0 Pac-12) will try to extend on a seven-match win streak when USC hosts Utah (6-6, 1-1) and Colorado (9-4, 1-1) in a pair of home contests this week at Galen Center. The Trojans take on the Utes on Friday (Sept. 29) at 7 p.m. PT and then will play the Buffaloes on Sunday (Oct. 1) at 1 p.m. PT. The USC-Utah match will be shown live on Pac-12 Mountain and the Trojans and Buffs will be carried on a live USC stream.
