USC Women’s Volleyball Tabbed No. 22 in AVCA Preseason Coaches’ Poll
August 15, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
The Women of Troy open the season with five road matches and begin in Houston on Aug. 25
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The USC women's volleyball team will begin the 2023 season ranked No. 22 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/Taraflex Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Women of Troy finished 2022 just outside of the top 25 and received enough votes to sit in the 26th position. The Trojans received votes in 13 polls and were ranked No. 24 in last year's preseason poll, their highest position. USC has appeared in the AVCA poll 521 times and has held a top-10 ranking 316 times. The Women of Troy are one of 22 teams ever to hold the No. 1 ranking and have held that ranking 47 times, which ranks seventh all-time.
USC is one of four Pac-12 teams among the nation's preseason top 25. Defending league champion Stanford—the recipient of 13 first-place votes—is ranked No. 3. Oregon is the only other Pac-12 team in the top 10 and checks in at No 9. Washington State is ranked No. 21 followed by the Trojans. Washington appeared on enough ballots to be listed under others receiving votes.
USC returns first-team AVCA All-American OH Skylar Fields (Missouri City, Texas). In 2022, Fields led the Pac-12 in kills (598), kills per set (5.11 kps), points (650.0), and points per set (5.56 pps). The Trojans also bring back junior setter Mia Tuaniga (Long Beach, Calif.) who led the Pac-12 in service aces (0.49 saps) in 2022 and ranked second with 1,308 assists as a sophomore. On defense, starting libero Gala Trubint (San Diego, Calif.) returns after a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team campaign in which she ranked sixth in the league with 3.78 digs per set.
The Trojans open 2023 on the road with matches at No. 19 Houston (Aug. 25) and No. 23 Rice (Aug. 26). USC will play its first home matches as host of the Trojan Invitational at Galen Center (Sept. 8-10) when UC Davis, Marist, and No. 13 San Diego come to visit. The Women of Troy trek into Big Ten territory to face Illinois and No. 16 Purdue for the Boilermaker Challenge (Sept. 14-15) and open their final season of Pac-12 play with a meeting against crosstown rival UCLA on Sept. 20. The Trojans will appear in Pac-12 Networks broadcasts 10 times this fall.
Under fourth-year head coach Brad Keller, USC (22-11) finished fourth in the Pac-12 standings (13-7) in 2022 and received one of 32 at-large berths into the NCAA tournament. The Women of Troy defeated High Point in the first round of the tourney but were eliminated by 10th-ranked site host Ohio State. It was the first NCAA tournament victory for Keller and the program's first appearance in the tourney since 2019.
