USC Women’s Volleyball Adds Outside Hitter London Wijay to 2023 Roster
August 15, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
The two-time CIF Southern Section Player of the Year will join the Women of Troy in time for the start of the fall season
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team will add prep outside hitter London Wijay (Mission Hills, Calif./Alemany HS) to its 2023 roster head coach Brad Keller announced on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
A 5-10 outside hitter, Wijay earned back-to-back CIF Southern Section Girls' Volleyball Player of the Year laurels as a sophomore in 2021 and as a junior in 2022. She recently led Munciana Volleyball Club's 18 Samurai squad to the 2023 AAU 18 Open National Championship where she was named the tournament's most valuable player.
Wijay completed high school a year early and reclassified into the class of 2023 to enroll and compete for the Trojans this fall.
"We are excited to have London join the Trojan family," said Keller. "We've seen what she can do on the volleyball court, but her maturity and competitive drive are what truly set her apart. It takes a driven individual to forgo their senior year of high school and join a program like ours, and we believe London has all the tools she needs to thrive in this environment and at this university. Our players, coaches, and staff are looking forward to working with her and are excited for what she'll bring to the team."
Wijay is a two-time All-CIF performer and a two-time All-Mission League choice. The Daily News selected her as its Offensive Player of the Year in back-to-back years (2021-22) and she was chosen as a second-team 18U Club All-American by PrepVolleyball.com. As a sophomore, Wijay was the only player in California with 35 or more kills in three matches. She logged 40 in the CIF quarterfinals and 35 apiece in the CIF semifinals and championship match. Wijay is the No. 2-ranked prospect in California according to PrepDig and was named to the 2023 Triple Crown NIT All-Tournament Team.
The Trojans open the 2023 season on the road with matches at Houston (Aug. 25) and Rice (Aug. 26). USC will play its first home matches as host of the Trojan Invitational at Galen Center (Sept. 8-10) when UC Davis, Marist, and San Diego come to visit. The Women of Troy trek into Big Ten territory to face Illinois and Purdue for the Boilermaker Challenge (Sept. 14-15), and then open their final season of Pac-12 play with a meeting against crosstown rival UCLA on Sept. 20. The Trojans will appear in Pac-12 Networks broadcasts 10 times this fall.
Under fourth-year head coach Brad Keller, USC (22-11) finished fourth in the Pac-12 standings (13-7) in 2022 and was awarded one of 32 at-large berths into the NCAA tournament. The Women of Troy defeated High Point in the first round of the tourney but were eliminated by 10th-ranked site host Ohio State. It was the first NCAA tournament victory for Keller and the program's first appearance in the tourney since 2019. Outside hitter Skylar Fields was named to the AVCA All-America first team.
