Four Trojans Set to Play in FIFA World Cup
July 10, 2023 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The FIFA Women's World Cup kicks off late this July and four current and former USC women's soccer players will be participating. Three Trojans alums will compete for their respective countries – Savannah DeMelo (USA), Ashleigh Plumptre (Nigeria), Dominique Randle (Philippines) – and one current USC player looks to make her World Cup debut – Simi Awujo (Canada).
Â
The 2023 World Cup will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, and runs July 20-Aug. 20. This is the most current and former USC players to ever compete in a single World Cup. In fact, the four USC participants this year surpasses the program's total number of World Cup players.
Â
In 1999, USC's Isabelle Harvey (Canada) and Susia Mora (Mexico) appeared in the World Cup. The only other Trojan to compete in the tournament is Amy Rodriguez (USA) who played in both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, winning the 2015 title with the U.S. Women's National Team.
Â
This is the second straight year that Awujo will miss the early part of the NCAA season due to international duty, after she played for Canada in the U-20 World Cup last year.
Â
The three USC alums are all looking to make their World Cup debuts as well, with Plumptre and Randle already recording caps for Nigeria and the Philippines in previous tournaments and friendlies. DeMelo made her first appearance for the USWNT this past weekend when she played 26 minutes as a substitute against Wales in the team's World Cup send-off game. She is the second USC player to ever earn a cap for the senior U.S. National Team.
Â
Plumptre and Awujo will face off on the first day of action as Nigeria takes on Canada on July 20. Randle and the Philippines also open up on the 20th, taking on Switzerland. DeMelo and the USWNT open the following day, facing Vietnam on July 21.
