USC Athletics Celebrates Juneteenth 2023
June 19, 2023 | Black Lives Matter
The federal holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States
In 2021, the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and President Biden passed and signed into law Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
Â
June 19, also known as Juneteenth (the name combines June with the number nineteen), acknowledges that on June 19, 1865, enslaved Black Americans were finally told that the Civil War had ended, and that they were free and had been free for two and a half years prior to learning about their freedom.  Historically, for the Black Community, this day has been known by a variety of names such as Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Emancipation Day, which emphasizes the importance of freedom and citizenship.
