USC Athletics Celebrates Juneteenth 2021

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that enslaved Black Americans had been freed 2 1/2 years earlier.
On Thursday, June 17, 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden signed a bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Juneteenth National Independence Day is now the 12th legal public holiday, and the first new one since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was signed into law in 1983 by then-President Ronald Reagan.
USC Athletics is celebrating Juneteenth this year by sharing educational resources and ways to celebrate.
