USC’s Rayah Marshall Selected For USA Basketball’s AmeriCup Team Trials
May 04, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Trojan sophomore is making her USA debut with this month's invitation.
USC's talented Rayah Marshall — fresh off helping her Trojans reach the NCAA Tournament while picking up All-Pac-12 Team honors for herself — has been selected to participate at the upcoming USA Basketball AmeriCup Team Trials, as announced today. In preparation for the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, which will be held in July in Mexico, 22 athletes from around the nation have been called in to compete for a spot on that Team USA roster.
This is Marshall's debut in the USA Basketball mix, as the guard/forward sets up to participate in the trials from May 11-15 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Marshall capped off her sophomore season with the Trojans by making history, setting a new USC record for single-season blocks with 98 stuffs tallied in 2022-23. She delivered seven in the NCAA First Round, extending her streak to 51 straight games with at least one block while marking up her 13th consecutive multi-block outing. With just two seasons under her belt at USC, Marshall ranks No. 4 all-time in career blocks with a total of 169 to date.
She delivered 14 double-doubles for the Trojans this past season — the most by a Trojan in a season since at least 1999 — and averaged 3.5 blocks per game to rank No. 2 in the nation overall. Marshall finished out the season as USC's third leading scorer with 12.7 points per game, and top rebounder with 11.5 boards per game. She is the first Trojan to average a double-double in an entire season since Tina Thompson in 1996-97.
A 2023 All-Pac-12 Team & Pac-12 All-Defensive Team selection, Marshall also was named a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in her sophomore season. After scoring a career-high 33 points in a win at Oregon State, she was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Jan. 2, 2023.
Marshall and the other USA Basketball AmeriCup Team Trial participants were selected by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee, chaired by DePaul University head women's basketball coach Doug Bruno, in collaboration with Jen Rizzotti, Connecticut Sun president and chair of the USA Basketball Women's National Team Committee.
Trials will be run by AmeriCup coaches Kamie Ethridge (Washington State University), Katrina Merriweather (University of Cincinnati) and Aaron Johnston (South Dakota State University).
Following selection of the 2023 USA Women's AmeriCup Team, athletes will return to Colorado Springs for training camp in June.
Since the event's inception in 1993, the United States has captured four AmeriCup gold medals, including titles in 2019 and 2021. In addition to the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela will participate in the 2023 FIBA AmeriCup. The draw is set to take place May 10.
