Austin Overn Leads USC Past UCLA in Pac-12 Tournament Opener, 6-4

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Austin Overn drove in five runs to help the USC baseball team overcome an early deficit and take down rivals UCLA in its opening game of pool play at the Pac-12 Tournament.
Overn hit a game-tying three-run homer and a go-ahead two-run triple to bring home five of USC's six runs in the contest, and the USC bullpen held the Bruins scoreless for the final five innings of play. The Trojans move to 34-22-1 overall, while UCLA falls to 27-24-1. USC continues pool play on Thursday against Washington.
USC fell behind twice early in the afternoon, first giving up a run in the top of the third and then a three-run double in the top of the fourth. Each time USC had the answer, with Bryce Martin Grudzielanek singling home a run in the bottom of the third, and then Overn hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to tie it.
Nick Lopez and Ryan Jackson started the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles and then scored on Overn's homer. It was again Lopez and Jackson on when Overn stepped to the plate in the sixth, with both scoring after the USC centerfielder laced a ball into the right field corner for the go-ahead triple.
After giving up a three-run double in the fourth, Blake Sodersten settled in and retired the side in order in the fifth before getting the first two outs of the sixth and giving way to Caden Connolly. Connolly struck out UCLA's JonJon Vaughns to strand a runner in the sixth, and then retired the side in order in the seventh and got the first out of the eighth. Kyle Wisch would take it home from there, holding UCLA scoreless over the final 1.2 to record the save.

The Trojans continue Pac-12 Tournament pool play on Thursday, facing No. 3-seeded Washington at 2:30 p.m. The Pac-12 Tournament semi-finals will be held on Friday and finals will be held on Saturday. All games will be at Scottsdale Stadium and broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network.
