USC Lacrosse Claims A Massive Haul of Pac-12 Regular Season Awards
May 02, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
The Trojans nearly platted their entire lineup on the all-conference list, as they claimed nine spots on the two teams
SAN FRANCISCO -Â USC Lacrosse secured four of the seven Pac-12 awards as junior Claudia Shevitz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS) was named the Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year and junior Kait Devir (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood HS) was given Pac-12 Co-Goalkeeper of the Year with Stanford's Kara Rahaim. Alongside them, graduate transfer Emma Wightman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Florida) was selected as Defensive Player of the Year, and coach Lindsey Munday was announced as Coach of the Year. The Trojans further solidified themselves in the award haul, earning nine spots on the Pac-12 All-Conference teams on Tuesday, May 2.Â
Â
USC tied Stanford for the most players on the All-Conference first team with five a piece on the list. As the best defense in the Pac-12, it is no surprise that the Trojans took three of the four defensive spots. Senior defender Olivia Dooley, sophomore defender Catherine Lord and Defensive Player of the Year Wightman locked up those spots on the first team. Dooley earns a first-team nod for the second straight year, and Wightman makes her debut on the Pac-12 All-Conference team, as she claimed All-AAC First Team honors at Florida in 2022. Lord introduces herself to the list after a stellar campaign that included claiming three defensive player of the week honors throughout the season (Feb. 11, 28; Mar. 28). Joining them on the first team is Midfielder of the Year Shevitz, who is also a first-time nominee, and redshirt sophomore Isabelle Vitale. Vitale, the leading points-getter for USC, is a two-time nominee for Pac-12 All-Conference, as she made the second team after the 2022 season.Â
Â
The second team features the squad's opposite side, showcasing three offensive student-athletes and the Pac-12's Co-Goalkeeper of the Year. Devir highlights the second team, as she claims a share of one of the major awards in the conference. Devir is a first-time nominee for the All-Conference team, as she posted the fourth-best goals-against average in the NCAA with 7.77. On the offensive side, the Trojans received honors for junior Maggie Brown, senior Ella Heaney and junior Shelby Tilton. Brown, the Trojans' goal leader, makes her inaugural appearance on a postseason list. On the flip side, both Heaney and Tilton were named to the All-Conference second team last year.Â
Â
All five of the Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year awards have been claimed by Trojans. Kerrigan Miller was selected for the honor in back-to-back years (2018-19), Huff took home the previous two awards (2021-22) and now Shevitz is the third USC player to house the award.Â
Â
Devir is the first Trojan to earn the honor of Goalkeeper of the Year, as the award was first introduced at the end of the 2022 season. The junior also joins the previous winner as co-winners, as Rahaim picked up the award in its inaugural status last year.Â
Â
Wightman is the third Trojan to win the Defensive Player of the Year award. Dooley claimed the award in 2022, and Jackie Gilbert was picked for the honor in 2019.Â
Â
Munday becomes the second coach to garner Pac-12 Coach of the Year multiple times in their career. The 11-year veteran earned her first conference recognition in 2019, as she led the Trojans to a championship season after they went 9-1 in the Pac-12 and 16-4 overall.Â
Â
The 17th-ranked Trojans (14-3, 9-1 Pac-12) secured the No. 1 seed after hoisting the Pac-12 regular-season trophy and will hope to do the same as they enter the conference tournament. USC holds a first-round bye but will meet the winner of No. 4 Arizona State (5-12, 3-7 Pac-12) and No. 5 California (5-12, 2-8 Pac-12) in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif. at the California Memorial Stadium.Â
