USC's Allie Jones Sets School Record In Winning Elite Heptathlon At Mt. SAC Relays
April 13, 2023 | Track & Field
Sets five personal bests, posts third-highest total in Pac-12 history
Allie Jones won the 800m with her fifth PR of the two-day competition to finish with a school-record 6217 points and win the Mt. SAC Relays Elite Heptathlon competition held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. today (April 13). Also, Morgan Fierro placed ninth in the men's 3000m steeplechase with the eighth-fastest time in USC history.
Jones needed a special 800m to re-take the lead in the final event, so she posted a PR of 2:13.03, her fifth personal best out of seven events, to score 921 point and move from 134 points down to winning the competition by 117 points over Ida Eikeng of Washington. Jones total eclipsed the previous USC heptathlon record held by Wendy Brown of 6079 points set in 1988, thirty-five years ago. Jones' total of 6217 points now ranks third all-time in the Pac-12, behind only Brianne Theisen of Oregon (6440 in 2012) and Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State (6307 in 2008). During the two days Jones set PRs in the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m. She won four of the seven events in the Elite Heptathlon: 100m hurdles, 200m, long jump and 800m.

- The second day of the Elite Heptathlon competition began similarly to first day, with Jones winning an event and setting a PR. Jones' winning long jump came in her final attempt as she leaped a wind-aided PR of 20-5.25/6.23m (+3.5). She also set her wind-legal PR in the second round with a jump of 20-0.50/6.11 (+1.0). Her winning jump earned her 921 points in the event and pushed her five-event total to 4700 points. At this point, her lead had soared to 140 points, with the javelin throw and 800m race remaining.
- Jones had her first blip in the competition in the javelin throw when her best mark went for 118-11 (36.25m). She finished seventh in the event and earned 596 points for her best throw. Now with just the 800m race remaining, Jones was in second place with 5296 points, 134 points behind Eikeng of Washington, who outscored Jones by 309 points in the javelin throw.
- Entering the 800m race, Jones would have to beat Eikeng by 10 seconds or more to secure the win and run a sub-2:23.00 time in the race to secure the school record, no problem on both accounts. Jones ran a PR of 2:13.03, more than a second and a half faster than her previous best and beat Eiking by over 18 seconds.
- Morgan Fierro had a 3000m steeplechase PR of 9:11.27 to place ninth in the men's collegiate/open 3000m steeplechase. His time moves him to eighth on USC's all-time list, the fastest steeplechase by a Trojan since 1989.
- Vienna Gao in her first 10000m race as a Trojan posted a time of 41.38.64 to finish 21st.
