USC Lacrosse's Emma Wightman Picks Up Her Second Weekly Award
April 11, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
The defender caused four turnovers and picked up four games in the Trojans Senior Day win over Stanford
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse graduate transfer defender Emma Wightman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Apr. 3-9; the league announced on Tuesday, Apr. 11. Stanford's sophomore midfielder Annabel Frist was chosen for the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week award.
Wightman propelled a defensive effort that limited its opponents to just eight goals during the weekend sweep for USC. The first-team defense held California to just one goal and Stanford to a season-low seven goals as the Trojans stayed atop the Pac-12 standings. In both games, Wightman made sure to showcase her presence as she posted seven caused turnovers and six groundballs. The graduate transfer had her best game as a Trojan against the Cardinal of Stanford, as she put together a four-caused turnover and four groundball game. Wightman hit a significant milestone in that game as her third caused turnover of the day put her at 100 career-caused turnovers (74 at the University of Florida, 26 at USC).
The award is Wightman's second this season and third career defensive honor (AAC DPOW; Mar. 14, 2023), as USC's defensive unit has claimed six of the nine Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week Awards. The Women of Troy have earned eight of the 18 awards this season, as senior Ella Heaney and junior Maggie Brown were announced as Offensive Player of the Week Award winners earlier this year. Wightman joins sophomore Catherine Lord as the only duplicate winner on the defensive side. USC also ties its program record with eight Player of the Week honors in a season.
The Pac-12 is in its sixth season of women's lacrosse. The Women of Troy have earned weekly conference honors 33 times (23 defensive and ten offensive) to rank first among league schools. Colorado sits second with 28 awards. Stanford currently has 25, and Arizona State follows that with 23. Oregon (5) and California (2) round out the group.
USC (11-3, 6-1 Pac-12) heads to the mountains in a battle of the top two as it takes on Colorado (6-5, 4-1 Pac-12) before taking its trip up to the north to take on Oregon (4-7, 0-5 Pac-12). The Women of Troy begin with a Pac-12 Network game against the Buffalo at 3 p.m. Friday (Apr. 14) at Kittredge Field in Boulder, Colo., and then head into the Ducks pond at noon Sunday (Apr. 16) at Pape' Field in Eugene, Ore.
