Wightman forces five caused turnovers, and Brown puts up nine points as the Trojans sweep the weekly awards for the eighth time
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse graduate transfer defender Emma Wightman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, and junior attacker Maggie Brown (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was chosen for the Offensive Player of the Week award for the week of Feb. 27-Mar. 5, the league announced on Tuesday, Mar. 7.
Wightman had a slew of defensive stats in two games, producing five caused turnovers and three groundballs. Her five caused turnovers ranked first on the team, and her groundball total ranked second for the two-game span. Wightman now ranks second on the Women of Troy with eight caused turnovers for the year. The graduate transfer was instrumental in a weekend of defensive dominance, as USC only allowed ten goals total against High Point (14-6) and Villanova (15-4). Her ability to help guard the net in the second game led to the Wildcats scoring the least amount of goals in a game against the Trojans since Apr. 28, 2019.
Brown produced career highs in almost every category on the offensive side, as she headlined the offensive effort for both games with nine total points. The junior picked up two new career highs (goals/points) against Villanova, as she posted four goals and two assists for six total points. Her four goals produced the second hat trick of her career. Brown also had two goals and one assist against High Point. In five games this season, Brown has accumulated half of her total goals from last season, as she is tied for first with the most goals on the squad.
The award is Wightman and Brown's first recognition from the Pac-12. Wightman previously was defensive player of the week for the AAC last year on Mar. 14. This is the eighth time that the Trojans have swept the Pac-12 weekly awards and the third year that they have swept multiple times in a season, first in 2019 (weeks six and eight) and 2022 (weeks two and 11).
The Pac-12 is in its sixth season of women's lacrosse. Since 2018, Women of Troy have earned weekly conference honors 30 times (20 defensive and ten offensive). USC ranks first in award totals; Colorado sits second with 26 awards. Arizona State follows with 22 and then Stanford with 21. Oregon (5) and California (2) round out the group.
