USC Baseball Drops Extra-Inning Contest at UC Irvine, 5-4

IRVINE, Calif. --The USC baseball team fell 5-4 in a 10-inning matchup to the UC Irvine Anteaters Tuesday.
Senior Garrett Clarke (1-2) came out of the bullpen for USC (14-9-1) and took the loss. Senior Blake Sodersten was a bright spot for the Trojans, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 3.1 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, with no walks and one strikeout.
In the batter's box, the Trojans were paced by senior Cole Gabrielson, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a triple and an RBI. Senior Johnny Olmstead furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Junior Ryan Jackson also contributed for USC, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a triple, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans were trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. USC scratched across a run off sophomore Finnegan Wall when Jackson tripled in Olmstead.
The Anteaters expanded their lead to 3-1 before the Trojans offense got back to work, tying it up in the sixth. USC put up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Gabrielson, which evened the score at 3-3.
UC Irvine busted up the tie and took a 4-3 lead moving into the ninth, when USC tied the game at four. UC Irvine then scored one time over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 5-4 win.
