USC outside hitter Skylar Fields and setter Mia Tuaniga were each chosen to the AVCA Pacific South All-Region Team
LEXINGTON, Ky. – USC women's volleyball senior OH Skylar Fields (Missouri City, Texas) was named the AVCA Pacific South Region Player of the Year and was chosen to the Pacific South All-Region Team alongside junior setter Mia Tuaniga (Long Beach, Calif.) the AVCA announced on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Â
Fields is USC's first Regional Player of the Year. While Trojans have garnered regional Freshman of the Year honors seven times since 2000—including Tuaniga in 2021—the AVCA only began awarding regional player of the year honors in 2017.
Â
Fields and Tuaniga each repeat their selections to the all-region teams from 2022 and push USC's total all-time selections to 70. They are each now eligible to be named to the AVCA All-America teams set to be chosen next week. This year's award is Tuaniga's second-career all-region nod and is the fifth for Fields who was also chosen three times to the Southwest Region Team while at Texas.
Â
Fields led the Pac-12 in kills (617), kills per set (5.14 kps), points (666.5), and points per set (5.55 pps); and ranks third nationally in each of those categories, second for kills per set. She was chosen for Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week three times to up her career total to seven selections; behind only nine awards won by All-American OH Samantha Bricio among Trojans. Fields was also chosen as the AVCA's National Player of the Week for the third time in her career on Nov. 7. She crossed the 2,000-kill plateau this season and moved into USC's top-20 for career kills with 1,215 of those collected in the Cardinal & Gold (2,141 in her career). Fields logged nine more double-doubles this season to bring her career total to 19 double-doubles. Her 2023 season totals for attacks (1,499 in third), kills, and points each rank third in USC single-season history. Fields ended her senior season with 20-kill performances in 12 of her final 13 matches and produced her 59th double-digit kills match as a Trojan; and has now had 37 matches with 20 kills or more for the Women of Troy.
Â
Tuaniga ranked fourth in the Pac-12 for assists (1,229) and was fifth for assists per set (10.07 aps). Her setting had the Trojans hitting at a .252 clip for fifth best in the Pac-12. She became just the eighth Trojan to cross the 3,000-assist plateau on Nov. 10 in Washington and ranks eighth all-time with 3,309. Tuaniga also moved into seventh place in USC's career records for service aces with 112 and had eight matches this season with multiple aces, including her fourth-career match with five or more. Tuaniga produced 13 double-doubles in 2023 to bring her career total to 28 double-doubles.
Â
The 25th-ranked Women of Troy (19-13) received the eighth seed in the Pittsburgh quarter of the NCAA tournament and swept UMBC in the first round before falling to site host No. 4 Pittsburgh in the second round.
