November 13, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Ten Trojans score, with JuJu Watkins landing six 3-pointers in a 35-point effort for USC.
LOS ANGELES — The No. 10 USC women's basketball team, enjoying its highest AP national ranking since 1994, went big in Galen Center with a 93-42 win over visiting Le Moyne behind a 35-point effort from freshman JuJu Watkins. The Trojans improve to 3-0 overall with the home win, which also was highlighted by 10 Trojans scoring in a 56.9-percent effort from the floor and 12 made 3-pointers from USC. Le Moyne goes to 0-4 with the loss.
USC was shooting at a 54.5-percent clip through the first half of action while holding Le Moyne to just 25 percent from the floor, with Trojans JuJu Watkins and Rayah Marshall both in double figured by halftime with 17 and 10 points, respectively. USC also was up on the boards 19-14 by the break. USC pressed on and wound up winning the boards 41-27 while finishing out the game shooting a season-high 56.9 percent from the floor to double up on Le Moyne's 28-percent effort. USC also made a season-high 12 threes, with Watkins accounting for six of those in her 35-point effort tonight.
Watkins also hauled in nine rebounds and had six steals for the Trojans while recording the second most points in a game by a USC freshman. Rayah Marshall was next with 12 points for USC, and Taylor Bigby delivered 10. Le Moyne was led by 14 points from Latoya Baker.
USC peeled out to an 11-0 lead in the game as Watkins, Marshall and Kaitlyn Davis getting in on the early scoring action for the Trojans. Le Moyne broke up the rally, but USC kept charging and was up 21-8 after 10 minutes of play. Watkins landed her third 3-pointer of the half and made it a four-point play, then dumped in back-to-back buckets soon after to keep USC in cruise control. Taylor Bigby and Dominque Onu got in on the 3-point party next, and USC was up 46-20 for halftime.
In the third, USC mounted a 21-0 run that put the Dolphins under water. Forbes and Malia Samuels both knocked down threes during the Trojan surge, while Watkins worked her way into the 20-point zone. Another Bigby blast from beyond the arc had USC up 76-28 to close the third. With her sixth 3-pointer of the game, Watkins had more points — 33 — than the Dolphins had as a team, with USC up 86-32 with 6:05 to go. With every active Trojan hitting the floor tonight, USC would wrap up a final 93-42 win over visiting Le Moyne.
