USC Swimming Set for 2023 Fall Home Opener

The Trojans will host the two-day, three-session USC Invitational beginning Friday, Oct. 13.

LOS ANGELES - The USC men's and women's swimming programs will see action at home for the first time this fall as the Trojans host UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii and UC San Diego for the two-day, three-session USC Swim Invitational at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.Â
MEET INFOÂ
The two-day invite will include three sessions, with the first beginning Friday at 1 p.m. Action will continue Saturday with a session at 9:30 a.m., followed by a session at approximately 12:30 p.m. (third session will begin roughly one hour following the conclusion of the second session).Â

The USC women's squad opened the season with a victory on the road, capturing the SMU Classic Invitational women's team title. Troy finished third at the invite. Â

In Dallas, the Trojans swept the 'Swimmer of the Meet' awards, with Justina Kozan winning on the women's side, and Chris O'Grady claiming the men's high point title.Â

Kaitlyn Dobler captured the 100y breaststroke in a pool and meet record time of 57.35, lowering her previous meet record set last year (59.09). Dobler was the lone Trojan to earn NCAA automatic bids at the meet, meeting the standard in both the 100y (57.35) and 200y breaststroke (2:05.59).Â

Additionally, 12 Trojans picked up NCAA Provisional times. On the women's side - Anicka Delgado (50y free – 22.59 / 100y free – 49.08 / 100y fly – 52.25) , Justina Kozan (200y free – 1:46.14 / 400y IM – 4:07.60 / 200y fly – 1:56.72 / 100y back – 53.60), Vasilissa Buinaia (100y free – 47.94 / 200y free – 1:45.83), Claire Tuggle (500y free - 4:42.81 / 200y IM – 1:58.76 / 400y IM – 4:12.12), Minna Abraham (200y free – 1:43.53 / 200y IM – 1:57.51) and Katherine Adams (200y breast – 2:13.70). On the men's side – Artem Selin (50y free – 43.04), Krzysztof Chmielewski (500y free – 4:15.18 / 100y fly – 46.56 / 200y fly – 1:41.60), Chris O'Grady (400y IM – 3:47.73 / 100y breast - 52.97 / 200y breast – 1:56.29), Vaggelis Makyrgiannis (100y back – 47.27 / 200y back – 1:43.80). 2022-23 SEASON RECAP:
In 2023, Maurer led the Women of Troy to a 12th place finish at NCAA's and a runner-up finish at the Pac-12 Championships. Troy finished 22nd at NCAAs and was fifth at the Pac-12 Championships. Under Maurer, Senior Kaitlyn Dobler earned first team All-America honors in both the 100y and 200y breaststroke, while fifth year Isabelle Odgers earned first team honors in the 200y breast. At the Pac-12 Championships, Dobler won two conference crowns, claiming both breaststroke events. Both of her squads earned CSCAA Fall & Spring Scholar All-America team honors with 19 swimmers being named to the conferences Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll.

RETURNING TALENT:
USC returns a handful of star talent including 2022 NCAA 100y breaststroke Kaitlyn Dobler, 2023 NCAA springboard runner-up diver Shangfei Wang and two-time Pac-12 Diving Champions Nike Agunbiade and Laurent Gosselin-Paradis. The All-Americans and veteran Trojans look to lead USC in the pool again this season.Â

Additionally, NCAA qualifying returners include Anicka Delgado, Hanna Henderson Hannah Kuechler, Justina Kozan, Caroline Famous, Maddie Huittfor the Women of Troy.Â

USC welcomes 17 new swimmers (12 freshmen) and two divers to the team this season (1 freshman).Â

Sophomore distance freestyle specialist Claire Tuggle, a transfer from Virginia, is coming off a fourth-place finish in the 500y free and seventh-place finish in the 1650y free at the ACC Championships. USC also adds Michigan transfer Sophia Kudryashova to their roster this season, with Kudryashova specializing in both the 100y and 200y freestyle. Rounding out the field is sprint freestyle specialist Vasilissa Buinaia, who looks to contribute a plethora of high-level competition experience as a member of the Russian National Team.Â
USC welcomes three accomplished freshman swimmers in Macky Hodges, Lindsay Barnes and Lilla Minna Abraham.Â

On the men's side, freshmen Ian Pickles, the 2023 Arizona D1 State Champion in the 100y free and 2023 World's Silver medalist Krzysztof Chmielewskiheadline Troy's batch of new talent. Both have twin brothers on the squad with similar swim experience, as Trojan rookies Evan Pickles and Michal Chmielewski also look to contribute this season. Other incoming talent includes four-time NISCA all-American Keller Morgan, GHSA 6A State Champion Adam O'Brien, two-time Speedo Sectionals Champion Salvador Goya and three-time WMPSSDL Champion Jack Moloney.Â

Sophomore Derek Zhang joins the Trojans following one season at Pittsburgh, where he was an ACC finalist and member of the All-ACC Academic team. USC also added a pair of fifth years in Jack Hamilton and Mark McCrary. Hamilton and McCrary were both repeat Ivy Championship qualifiers while competing for Penn.
