May 17, 2022 | Baseball
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The USC baseball team scored in the eighth and ninth to take down No. 18 UC Santa Barbara, 5-4, on Tuesday night.
It was the second win over the ranked Gauchos this season for USC, as the Trojans improve to 25-25 on the year. UC Santa Barbara falls to 37-12.
The game went into the eighth tied 1-1 after both pitching staffs found their way out of jams through most of the evening. USC finally got to the Gauchos, loading the bases in the top of the eighth and drawing a pair of walks to score two.
Nick Lopez added what turned out to be some crucial insurance runs, when he drove in a pair with a two-out single in the top of the ninth. The Gauchos scored three in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run on second, but Kyle Wisch got a final flyout to end the game.
USC used six pitchers in the win, with Carson Lambert getting the win and Wisch picking up the save. Garrett Clarke tossed 4.0 scoreless innings in the start, giving up two hits and one walk, while striking out three. Matt Keating threw 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one.
