USC Finishes Fourth Overall to Wrap Up Pac-12 Championships

The No. 11 ranked Trojans, led by repeat A-finalist and school record holder Chris O'Grady, wrapped up the Pac-12 Swim Championships on Saturday (March 5), in Federal Way, Wash.
USC finished fourth overall with 449 points, their best finish at the Championships since 2018. Taking home the team title was Cal with 853.5 points. In second was Stanford (760) and third was Arizona State with 652.
In the 200y breaststroke, Trojan Chris O'Grady blasted a 1:51.67 to touch fourth, secure an NCAA A-cut and post the fastest time in USC history in the event. O'Grady's time lowered the record set by teammate Ben Dillard in November of 2021 (1:52.44). Dillard, who also appeared in the championships final, touched seventh in 1:53.14.
After finishing third in the men's 100y breaststroke yesterday, Pellini returned today to touch seventh in the consolation final of the 200, clocking a 1:56.33
Freshman Daniel Matheson had another impressive day of swims, this time posting a PR 14:51.59 In the 1650y freestyle. His time was a personal best by over twenty seconds, dipping under the 15-minute mark for the first time in his career. Touching seventh overall was Victor Johansson in 15:03.03.
Junior Ivan Puskovitch finished 13th overall in the mile, posting a 15:18.47 for another Trojan PR. David Mertz was 16th in 15:26.22.
Senior Nikola Miljenic earned a second swim, finishing fourth in the consolation final of the 100y freestyle in 42.82.
USC's Vaggelis Makrygiannis was sixth in the A-final of the 200y backstroke, clockinga 1:40.92. Jack Kirby raced in the consolation final, posting a PR 1:41.63 for second. Paul Retterer was seventh in the consolation final (1:44.94).
Senior Alexei Sancov finished seventh in the 200y fly, touching in 1:42.72. Teammate Jackson Odgers was third in the consolation final, posting a 1:44.61.
USC closed out the evening with a fifth place finish in the men's 400y freestyle relay as Max Saunders, Sancov, Pellini and Miljenic combined for a 2:52.92.
Next up, a handful of Trojans will head to the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships in Atlanta, Georgia (March 23-26).
