No. 5 USC Men’s Volleyball Falls 3-1 to No. 14 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif.— Will Rottman had 20 kills (.436) and Luke Turner added 11 kills (.667) as the No. 14 Stanford men's volleyball team upset No. 5 USC at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.
USC, fell to 16-4 on the season (3-2 MPSF) while the Cardinal improved to 10-8 (2-3 MPSF).
Simon Gallas led the Trojans with 22 kills (.452), 2 aces and 1 block. Sam Kobrine added 16 kills (.257), 3 digs, 2 assists and 1 block for Troy.
As a team, Stanford hit .480 compared to USC's .327.
Stanford jumped to a quick 8-2 lead to open the match. After calling a timeout at 11-19, the Trojans battled back to diminish the point gap at 15-19. The Cardinal continued to push points and claimed the first set 25-19.
The Trojans came into the second set with vengeance. After taking 12-8 lead, USC never lost control of the set. The Cardinal tried to slow down the Trojans by calling a timeout as USC held a 20-15 score, but the Trojans prevailed and won the set 25-20 to even out the overall match at 1-1.
After exchanging points back and forth and being tied at 9-9, the Cardinal pushed ahead 18-12. As he had all match, Gallas continued to lead the Trojans in kills, but the Cardinal continued to stay ahead. They won 25-16 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was a battle. As points were exchanged between the two teams, Chris Hall scored an ace to give the Trojans a 11-10 lead. As USC pushed ahead 15-12, Stanford fought back to tie up the set at 18-18. USC jumped ahead and held the momentum leading 22-20, but the Cardinal scored two to tie it up at 22-22. Both teams continued to score and sideout until Stanford won the final two points to take the set 28-26 and win the match.
The Trojans return to Maples Pavilion tomorrow (Mar. 26) for a rematch against the Cardinal at 6 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
