LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball couldn't overcome a seven-run seventh inning by Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon, falling one short of a sweep after dropping the finale 9-7 at Dedeaux Field.

USC battled back and got the tying run on base in the ninth, but the Trojans left two runners on to end the game. USC moves to 2-1 on the season while Santa Clara improves to 1-2.

The Trojans erased an early deficit with three runs in the third inning, getting a two-run single by Garret Guillemette and one-run single by D'Andre Smith.

USC took a 4-2 lead into the seventh, but the visiting Broncos scored seven runs on seven hits to break the game open. JonJon Berring cleared the bases with a three-run double in the inning, and Dawson Brigman and Alex Lambeau each had RBI singles.

The Trojans bounced back with three in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one on a double by Johnny Olmstead and then scoring back-to-back runs on a wild pitch and passed ball. Tyresse Turner and Smith singled to start the bottom of the ninth, but a flyout and then double-play ended the threat and the game.

After the seven-run seventh by Santa Clara, Jason Starrels pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to settle things down and give USC a chance to come back.
