April 02, 2021 | Men's Volleyball, Features
For the second consecutive night, the No. 2-ranked BYU men's volleyball team defeated visiting USC, this time by the score of 25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-20, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (April 2) in Provo, Utah.
Â
BYU improved to 16-2 both overall and in the MPSF while winning its 11th straight match. USC fell to 5-10 overall and in the MPSF. It was USC's 26th consecutive loss to BYU in Provo, with Troy's last victory there over the Cougars coming in 1996.
Â
On Thursday (April 1), the Cougars posted a 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 win over the Trojans in Provo.
Â
For the second match in a row, USC was without head coach Jeff Nygaard, who stayed in the hotel with a non-COVID-19 related illness. Assistant coach Gary Sato filled in for Nygaard.

In the third set, BYU turned a 14-13 deficit into a 20-14 lead, but USC then went on a 10-3 run to move ahead 24-23 and soon after back-to-back kills by Fauntleroy and Browning ended the set in extra time.
Â
BYU scored 3 straight points in the fourth set to go up 12-9 and extended it to 17-13, all the cushion the Cougars needed to close out the match while hitting .429 in the set.
Â
USC now returns home to the Galen Center next week to conclude 2021 regular season play with a pair of matches versus No. 9 Grand Canyon on Friday (April 9) and Saturday (April 10), both at 5 p.m. PT. Seed positioning for the upcoming Mountain Pacific Sports Federation will be on the line.
