USC's Evan Mobley Named To The Wooden Award All-America Team
March 26, 2021 | Men's Basketball
First Trojan first-team All-America selection since Harold Miner in 1992
USC men's basketball freshman forward Evan Mobley has been named to the 2021 John R. Wooden Award All-America Team, it was announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on ESPNU today (March 26). Mobley, one of 10 players named to the Wooden All-America team, becomes the first Trojan to be named first team All-America since Harold Miner in 1992.
The 7-0 Mobley is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 3.0 blocks per game through USC's first 31 games of the season. His 93 total blocks rank second on USC's all-time single-season shots blocked list and are the second most in the country this season. Mobley leads all Pac-12 players in rebounds (273), blocks and double-doubles (12). Â
Mobley is the only Division I player to be averaging at least 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 assists. Among Division I freshmen men's basketball players, Mobley ranks in the top five in blocks per game (1st, 3.0), field goal percentage (2nd, 58.0 percent) free throw attempts (2nd, 182), free throws made (4th, 125), double-doubles (3rd, 12), total rebounds (2nd, 273), defensive rebounds per game (2nd, 6.03), total points (4th, 513) and points per game (5th, 16.5).
Mobley became the first Pac-12 player ever to earn Pac-12 Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors in a single season and only the second major conference player to accomplish the feat, joining Anthony Davis of Kentucky (2012).
Earlier in March Mobley was also named to the Associated Press, National Association of Basketball Coaches and U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-America second teams.
All players on the Wooden All-America Team have been certified by their university to meet or exceed the qualifications for the Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden when the Award was established. The qualifications include: candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court; candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; candidates must be making progress toward graduation and have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their school; candidates must contribute to team effort; candidates must excel in both offense and defense; and candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season.Â
