Amelia Garvey, Alyaa Abdulghany Post Season Bests; USC Leads Sun Devil Classic
February 16, 2021 | Women's Golf
Four Trojans in the top 8 after 36 holes.
Seniors Amelia Garvey and Alyaa Abdulghany each fired season-best 2-under 70s while senior Allisen Corpuz repeated her 1-under 71 as USC moved from third to first after the second round Tuesday (Feb. 16) at the Talking Stick G.C. Piipaash Course in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Â
The Trojans, seeking their second win in a row to start the season, posted a 2-under second round and were the only team under par, taking over first at 1-under 575 (289-286), one shot ahead of host Arizona State. UCLA and Oregon are tied for third at 11-over.
Â
Abdulghany (72-70) posted four birdies today while Corpuz (71-71) had three and they are tied for fourth at 2-under 142, two off the lead. Corpuz is in the hunt for her second straight medalist honor, Abdulghany her first this year.
Â
"Our three All-Americans were huge for us today," USC Head Coach Justin Silverstein said. "They really stepped up and put up some good rounds on a pretty difficult golf course. We're in a good position to come out of here with a win if we take care of business tomorrow, but we will need our best to hold off a very, very talented Arizona State team and some others in contention."
Â
Abdulghany and Corpuz are one shot back of sophomore teammate Alexa Melton, who posted a par round today as an individual entry to finish at 3-under 141 (69-72). She was 3-over thru 10 but closed at 3-under to square her day.
Â
"Alexa didn't get off to the best start this morning, but showed great poise in her last eight holes today," Silverstein said. "Being able to close a round like that is something we look for in our players and we were super pleased to see her close that round and post a good score."
Â
Garvey is tied for eighth at par 144 (74-70) after a four-birdie day, including one on 16 to get back to 2-under.
Â
Freshman Brianna Navarrosa is tied for 23rd at 5-over 149 (72-77) and junior Katherine Muzi is tied for 27th at 6-over 150 (75-75). Muzi eagled the par 5 fifth hole after converting on a 25-foot putt.
Â
USC will tee off with Arizona State and Oregon beginning at 9:42 a.m. MT on Wednesday.
