USC Women's Rower Katarzyna Pilch Earns Multiple Postgraduate Scholarships
May 14, 2020 | Women's Rowing, Features
USC graduating senior Katarzyna Pilch was awarded three impressive academic honors. The Trojan rower was the female recipient of the Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship, earned the Renaissance Scholar Distinction and won the Renaissance Scholar Prize.
The Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarships, worth $9,000 each, are awarded to up to two student-athletes from each Pac-12 school annually. These worthy student-athletes maintained a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and demonstrated a commitment to education, campus and community involvement, and leadership.
Pilch was also named a Steven and Kathryn Sample Renaissance Scholar. USC recognized 281 seniors from the 2020 class as Renaissance Scholars. This distinction recognizes undergraduate students who have excelled in their studies while completing a major and a minor (or two majors) in widely disparate fields of study. The objective is to achieve breadth and depth in two widely separate fields of thought. They must meet requirements for superior academic performance, including no less than a 3.5 overall grade point average, and no less than a 3.5 grade point average in their respective programs of study.
Among the 281 Renaissance Scholars, 97 of them applied for the 2020 Renaissance Prize. Pilch was one of 11 Renaissance Scholars selected as a Prize Winner. As a Renaissance Prize Winner, Pilch will receive $10,000 towards her graduate studies. She will also have her name permanently engraved on the Wall of Scholars in Leavey Library.
Pilch excelled in the classroom. She holds a 3.94 cumulative GPA with a major in cognitive science and a minor in two-dimensional studies. She earned placement on the 2019 Pac-12 All-Academic First Team and was selected as a CRCA Scholar Athlete. Pilch was accepted to the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England where she will pursue a Master of Philosophy in Education (Arts, Creativity and Education). She will begin her one-year graduate program in October of 2020, and will row for the University of Cambridge.
Pilch was also a standout on the water. The rower from Krakow, Poland was an integral member of the Varsity 8 boat. Although her 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19, she made an impact on the USC women's rowing program her previous three years. She competed at the 2018 NCAA Championships with the Women of Troy and helped to extend USC's undefeated winning streak against UCLA to 18-0 all-time by beating the Bruins every year of her collegiate career.
To be selected for a Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship, a student-athlete must have:
•Maintained an overall undergraduate minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 (based on a 4.00 scale);
•Completed his/her final season of intercollegiate athletics eligibility in all sports or be in his/her final year of undergraduate study, having exhausted athletics eligibility in all sports;
•Been accepted to or already be enrolled as a full-time student in a graduate or professional program at an accredited institution, or in a postgraduate program for which an undergraduate degree is required for admission;
•Performed with distinction as a member of a varsity team; and
•Exemplified behavior, both in competition and beyond, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution, and intercollegiate athletics.
