Trojans Go Big Around The Globe
March 09, 2020 | Men's Tennis, Features
From Davis Cup to Challenger and Pacific Coast champs, Trojan tennis had a busy and successful weekend.
The Trojan tennis family divided and conquered around the world over the past weekend, with big wins tallied across the Davis Cup, Oracle Challenger Series and Pacific Coast Doubles. Let's look back at USC's tennis footprint from the weekend.
DAVIS CUP
USC junior Daniel Cukierman tallied wins in singles and doubles to help lift Israel to victory over Turkey.
USC grads Roberto Quiroz and Emilio Gomez both posted wins over top-100 opponents to lead Ecuador to a win over Japan.
USC grad Robert Farah — winner of two Grand Slams in the past year — drummed up a doubles win as Colombia beat Argentina.
ORACLE CHALLENGER SERIES INDIAN WELLS
Seven-time All-American Steve Johnson — ranked No. 75 in the world — dropped just a single set on his path to a second Oracle Challenger Series title. He'd face off against Jack Sock in the championship match in Indian Wells, and pounded out a 6-4, 6-4 win to claim the crown.
PACIFIC COAST DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Competing unattached at the annual doubles event in La Jolla, five current Trojans and one recent grad reached the semifinals. USC's sophomore-senior duo of Bradley Frye and Brandon Holt squared off against teammates Stefan Dostanic and Jake Sands — a freshman-sophomore combo — in one semifinal. Frye and Holt would prevail, putting them up against USC brothers Colter and Tanner Smith in the title match. There, top-seeded Frye and Holt stole the crown from their fellow Trojans with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
