Women of Troy Fall to Stanford in Pac-12 Conference Opener

PALO ALTO, CALIF.--The USC women's tennis team lost to Stanford 7-0 on Friday (Mar. 6) in Palo Alto, Calif. in the team's first Pac-12 Conference match of the season. The Women of Troy are now 7-5 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 Conference play.
Doubles began as Stanford's Gordon/Madurawe defeated USC's Con. Branstine/Neffa 6-2 on court two. Over on court one, the Cardinal delivered USC's No. 16 Cayetano/Kulikov their first loss of the dual match season. Stanford's No. 19 Arbuthnott/Blake defeated the Trojan tandem 6-4 on court one to clinch the doubles point. USC entered singles at a 0-1 deficit.
Stanford rolled their momentum from doubles into singles. On court three, USC's Danielle Willson lost 6-0, 6-1 to Stanford's No. 117 Angelica Blake. Trojan Sydney Van Alphen lost 6-2, 6-1 to Stanford's Sara Choy who increased the Cardinal's lead to 3-0 overall.
The Cardinal clinched the match as Stanford's Emma Higuchi defeated USC's Constance Branstine 6-2, 6-1 on court six.
Although Stanford had clinched the match, the remaining courts were played out. Trojan Ana Neffa fell 6-4, 6-2 to Stanford's No. 97 Janice Shin on court four, and USC's No. 22 Angela Kulikov lost her second match of the dual season to No. 12 Michaela Gordon with a 7-5, 6-3 score on court one.
The match concluded with a Stanford win as No. 121 Emily Arbuthnott beat USC's No. 44 Eryn Cayetano 6-3, 7-6 on court two.
The Women of Troy turn their attention to their match against California tomorrow (Mar. 7) at 12:30 p.m. PST at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif.
