The No. 8 USC women's swimming and diving team, led by senior and three-time NCAA champion Louise Hansson, had their season heartbreakingly shortened after the NCAA made the decision to cancel all winter and spring championships last Thursday amid coronavirus concerns.
The Trojans were set to compete at the 2020 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, GA., starting today, March 18 through Sat., March 21. USC had 10 swimmers set to attend the NCAA Championships along with a record four divers, including two freshmen.
Today, March 18, would've marked the first night of the Championships, with the 800y free relay. USC had the second seed in the 800y free relay of Hansson, Schlicht, Wade and Transom who posted a 6:54.91 at Pac-12 Championships.
USC'S NCAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
No. 8 USC, under 14th-year head coach Dave Salo, is one of only eight schools to have won an NCAA swimming and diving team title (1997). The Trojans have finished in the top 10 in nine of the past 10 years. USC has finished third three times at the NCAAs, fourth four times and fifth three times among 30 top 10 finishes in 38 appearances since the first NCAA Championships in 1982 (including top 10s in 23 of the past 26 years). Troy owns 59 combined individual AIAW and NCAA titles (including two relays). Among those, 45 are NCAA titles.
LOUISE HANSSON
USC senior Louise Hansson, a Swedish Olympian and national teamer and the defending NCAA champion in the 100y and 200y fly, was set to defend her crowns in the midst of another successful season … She was the top seed in the 200y fly (1:51.26), third in the 100y fly (49.94), sixth in the 200y free (1:43.01), eighth in the 200y IM (1:54.09) and 12th in the 100y free (47.82) … At the 2020 Pac-12 Women's Swimming Championships, Hansson took home the swimmer of the meet award after defending her three crowns in the 100y fly, 200y fly and 200y IM … Last year, Hansson became the first Trojan since Hosszu to win three Pac-12 titles in one season when she swept the aforementioned races in 2018 and 2019. Her 49.34 to win the 100y fly broke the NCAA record held by Kelsi Worrell (49.43). In addition to the fly events, she holds USC records in the 100y (47.03) and 200y free (1:41.81) and the 100y back (50.74), the last of which she set leading off USC's 2019 Pac-12 400y medley relay. Hansson is also part of USC's school standards in the 400y free relay and the 200y and 400y medley relays … Hansson's eight individual conference titles are the most for a Trojan since Canadian diver Blythe Hartley (eight titles from 2002-2006) … Hansson's 2018 NCAA title in the 100y fly was USC's first.
TROJANS AT THE NCAAs
Sophomore Laticia Transom was primed to score at her second NCAAs as she enters the meet fifth in the 200y free (1:42.47) and 13th in the 100y free (47.83) … senior Tatum Wade returned to NCAAs as the 21st seed in both the 200 IM (1:56.19) and the 200y free (1:44.37) … Junior Marta Ciesla, who was a key relay component in 2018 and a strong individual finisher last year, was the 15th-seed in the 50y free (21.86) and 20th in the 100y free (48.02) … Senior Catherine Sanchez returned to the NCAAs for the fourth year in a row, still searching for her first individual scoring swim in the 200y fly after finishing 18th last year in 1:55.87 for a career-best NCAA results … other returners that aimed to earn individual scoring swims this year were sophomores Isa Odgers (200y IM, 100y breast, 200y breast) and Jemma Schlicht (50y free, 100y free, 100y fly) along with junior Maggie Aroesty (100y breast, 200y breast) … Two freshman swimmers were set to make their debuts at this years championships including Greece native, Nicole Pavlopoulou, and Canadian swimmer, Aela Janvier… USC was set to send a school-record four divers, led by seniors Naomi Gowlett and Carly Souza each qualified on 1-meter and platform respectively. Freshman Nike Agunbiade, who qualified on all three boards was set to make her NCAA debut alongside freshman Savannah Stocker who qualified on platform.
Troy was seeded third in the 400y free relay (3:10.76 – Hansson, Ciesla, Wade, Transom), sixth in the 200y free relay (1:27.41 – Ciesla, Transom, Schlicht, Wade) and tenth in the 400y medley relay (3:30.73 – Transom, Odgers, Hansson, Ciesla ).
PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
At the 2020 Pac-12 Championships the Women of Troy finished third, marking the tenth time in the last 11 years the Trojans finish top-three in the conference. USC ended the meet with two relay titles (800y free, 400y free), and five individual titles (Louise Hansson – 100y fly, 200y IM, 200y fly and Laticia Transom – 200y free, 100y free).
SEASON IN REVIEW
The Trojans kicked off the season at the two-day, three-session Trojan Swim Invite that saw junior Marta Ciesla win the 100y free while sophomore Isa Odgers won the 200y breast and senior Catherine Sanchez captured the 200y fly.
Odgers then won a career-best three times (100-200y breast, 200y IM) to lead the USC women in their dual-meet opening win against Utah. Senior co-captain Louise Hansson, the two-time NCAA champion in the 100y fly, also made her season debut with a win in specialty. Sophomore Laticia Transom posted her first two-win day as a Trojan with victories in the 50y and 200y free. Sanchez won the 200y fly for the second meet in a row.
At the Art Adamson Invite hosted by Texas A&M, four swimmers combined for a total of seven individual event wins while competing against A&M, Stanford, Hawaii, and Air Force. The Trojan women won four relays during the invite, earning three A cuts in the 200y, 400y and 800y free relays. Senior Louise Hansson took the 200y IM (1:56.17) and 100y fly (50.05), earning the first NCAA A cut of the season for the Trojans. Laticia Transom won the 200y free (1:43.27) and 100y free (47.83).
To kick off the spring season, the unbeaten USC women's team traveled to Pullman, Wash., to compete against Washington State. Odgers recorded a meet-best three first-place finishes, winning the 100y (1:02.71) and 200y breast (2:13.04) and the 400y IM (4:25.16). Her performance at Washington State earned her Pac-12 swimmer of the week. Both Odgers (200y breast – 2:13.04) and Hansson (100y fly – 53.98) broke Gibb pool records and contributed to the 155-102 win over the Cougars.
The Trojans hosted Minnesota (Jan. 17) where sophomore Laticia Transom posted a pair of wins against the Gophers. Marta Ciesla (22.92) led the USC sweep in the 50y free. Laticia Transom (23.07) and Jemma Schlicht (23.49) completed the USC 1-2-3 finish.
USC then hosted No.1 Cal (Jan. 31) and No.5 Stanford (Feb. 1) where sophomores Isa Odgers won twice against the Bears. Laticia Transom (53.50) won the 100y back against Cal and senior Louise Hansson took the 100y fly (53.80). Hansson (53.07) followed it up with a win in the same event the following day against Stanford. Junior Marta Ciesla (22.82) pulled off an impressive first place finish in the 50y free, and also contributed to a Trojan win in the 400y free relay (Hansson, Transom, Ciesla, Wade – 3:17.04).
In the final dual of the season, USC romped UCLA 181-119, winning 11 races to extend their unbeaten streak against the Bruins to 13. Jemma Schlicht won the 50y free in a season best 21.82. Freshman Aela Janvier took the 200y back in 1:55.06 and touched second in the 100 in a season best 53.85.

Captains for this year's Trojans were seniors Louise Hansson, Hanni Leach and diver Carly Souza for the women.
Hansson is a two-year captain and the defending NCAA champion in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly. Other All-Americans that returned for the Trojans included Leach, seniors Tatum Wade, junior Marta Ciesla and sophomore Laticia Transom.
Other key returners included junior Maggie Aroesty (2018 Pac-12 200-yard breaststroke champion), senior diver Naomi Gowlett (2019 Pac-12 platform runner-up) and NCAA vets like senior Catherine Sanchez and sophomore Jemma Schlicht.
Freshmen Nicole Pavlopoulou (Greece) and Aela Janvier (Canada) were amongst the women's team top newcomers.
