March 11, 2020 | Men's Volleyball, Features
Jordan Hoppe had 21 kills and 9 digs and teammate Raymond Barsemian added 16 kills, 6 digs, 4 blocks and 2 aces to help the No. 13 Concordia men's volleyball team overcome a 2-set deficit and come back to defeat USC, 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 17-15, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Wednesday (March 11) in Irvine.
USC fell to 5-14 overall and 1-6 in the MPSF. Concordia improved to 11-10 overall and 3-4 in league play.
Brandon Browning led USC with 17 kills while hitting .429 and added 10 digs and 2 aces, while Vecas Lewin had 11 kills (hitting .550) and 5 blocks, Simon Gallas came off the bench to get 9 kills, Adam Flood had 7 kills and 8 digs, Matt Faraimo had 11 digs and Cole Paxson had 9 kills.
Owen Chun added 12 kills for Concordia, Addison Enriques had 16 digs and Jonathan Carlson had 9 kills and 11 digs.
Concordia hit .315 to USC's .273. The Trojans posted 7.0 blocks to the Eagles' 5.5.
USC built an 8-4 lead early in the first set, but Concordia tied it at 15-15 before the Trojans soon after went on a 3-point run to go up 23-20 and close out the set. The second set was tight until 3 straight USC points gave Troy a 20-16 edge, enough to hold off the Eagles. USC fell behind 4-2 in the third set and Concordia steadily pulled away. Concordia jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set and USC could never quite overcome the deficit. The fifth set was tight throughout before the Eagles tallied the final 2 points in extra time.
USC is off until it hosts No. 1 BYU on March 26 and No. 14 Stanford on March 28 in the Galen Center, both at 7 p.m. PT. The Trojans were scheduled to host Harvard this Saturday (March 14), but the Crimson this week cancelled their West Coast trip (the match will not be rescheduled).
