Transom wins 100y free, Trojans take 400y free relay.
Senior Louise Hansson and sophomore Laticia Transom each won individual conference titles and contributed to a historic USC title-winning relay to lead the Trojans on Saturday (Feb. 29) during the final night of the 2020 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
USC finished third place with 1212, marking the tenth time in the last 11 years the Trojans have finished top three or better at the Pac-12 Championships. Under head Coach Dave Salo, the women's squad managed an impressive top three finish with only sixteen girls on the roster compared to many other Pac-12 schools with 24-man rosters. Stanford won the team title with 1598 points while Cal was second (1224.5).
Hansson, who won the 200y IM Thursday and the 100y fly Friday, blasted a 1:51.26 to win the 200 fly and post the fastest time in the country this season. Last year, Hansson joined a prestigious list of Trojans to win three conference titles in the same season. This season, she made history winning three conference titles for two consecutive seasons.
With a cumulative total of eight individual Pac-12 titles, Hansson now has the most titles for a Trojan since Canadian diver Blythe Hartley won 8 Pac-10 diving titles between 2002-2006. Hansson is also the first Pac-12 woman to sweep the 100 and 200y fly back to back years since Misty Hyman of Stanford in 1998-1999. The senior also won Pac-12 Championship Swimmer of the Meet after collecting three individual and two relay titles in one conference meet (Trojan record).
Sophomore Transom, the winner of the 200y free Friday, earned a Pac-12 title in the 100y free posting a lifetime PR 47.84. Transom is the first Trojan to ever win conference titles in both the 100 and 200y free. She is also the second Trojan in school history to win the 100y free.
Junior Marta Ciesla (48.02) touched second in the 100y free to earn a spot on the podium with a lifetime PR swim. Senior Tatum Wade took the fourth place spot posting a PR 48.35.
USC's other scorers in the 200y fly were senior Catherine Sanchez who, after a prelims swim off, returned to post a 1:57.26 and win the consolation final. Also in the consolation final, was sophomore Makenna Turner who took fifth, finishing in a PR 1:58.74.
Sophomore Isa Odgers (2:09.00) led a Trojan 4-5-6 finish in the 200y breast A final. Senior Maggie Aroesty finished fifth in 2:10.10, improving from her third place finish in the B finals last year. Freshman Nicole Pavlopoulou touched sixth in 2:10.14 for a PR.
For the first time in school history USC had four finalists competing in the women's platform competition. Leading the Trojans was freshman Savannah Stocker who placed third with 290.20. Seniors Naomi Gowlett (288.55) was third, Carly Souza (271.85) fourth and freshman Nike Agunbiade was seventh with 236.80.
The Trojans closed the meet with a crown in the 400y free relay as Hansson, Ciesla, Wade and Transom posted a 3:10.76 to win the event. USC's win marks the first Trojan 400y free relay title in school history. The relay finished three seconds ahead of Cal and was less than a one second away from breaking a school record.
USC will return to training before gearing up for the NCAA women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 18-21 in Athens, GA.
