USC Men's Volleyball Is Swept At No. 2 BYU

Davide Gardini had 9 kills while hitting .636 and added 8 digs to help the unbeaten No. 2-ranked BYU men's volleyball team sweep USC, 25-18, 25-15,25-19, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (Feb. 22) in BYU.

BYU stayed undefeated in 2020 by improving to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in the MPSF. USC fell to 3-12 overall and 1-5 in the MPSF.Â

For USC, Billy Fauntleroy had 14 kills, Adam Flood had 7 kills, Cole Paxson had 7 digs and Jameson McKibbin had 4 blocks.

Gabi Garcia Fernandez added 8 kills and 6 blocks for BYU, while Branden Oberender had 7 blocks and Miki Jauhiainen had 5 blocks.

BYU hit .433 to USC's .155. The Cougars also had more blocks (14.0 to 6.0), digs (24 to 18) and aces (4 to 1) than the Trojans.

USC fell behind quickly in the first set, 5-2, and BYU steadily pulled away while hitting .478. The second set was tied at 11-11 before the Cougars ran off 9 straight points and cruised in. BYU got off to a 6-3 edge in the third set and USC was unable to catch up as the Cougars hit .450.

USC now returns home after a 4-match MPSF road trip to host a non-conference match on Saturday (Feb. 29) at 2 p.m. PT against No. 3 UC Santa Barbara of the Big West. The match will be held in the North Gym because of a scheduling conflict in the Galen Center.
