USC Opens Tony Gwynn Classic With 6-2 Win Over Seattle
February 21, 2020 | Baseball, Features
SAN DIEGO – Clay Owens drove in four runs, and Kyle Hurt and John Beller combined on the mound to keep the Seattle bats in check as the USC baseball team opened the Tony Gwynn Classic with a 6-2 win over the Redhawks.
The Trojans move to 3-1 with the victory, while Seattle falls to 2-3.
Hurt tossed 5.0 scoreless innings before handing it off to Beller for the final four frames as the two combined to strike out 14 batters and walk just three. The pair stranded six runners on base in the game.
Owens opened up the game with a towering three-run home run in the first inning and then added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to drive in the first four runs of the game for USC. The Trojans added another run in the fifth on a Bart West single and capped their scoring on a Tyler Pritchard RBI single in the eighth.
The Redhawks scored their first and only earned run of the day immediately after Hurt exited the game, when Connor O'Brien greeted Beller with a solo-homer on the first pitch he threw. The Trojan lefty settled in quickly after that, retiring nine of the next 10 batters he faced. Seattle would score in the ninth on an error, but that was it for the Redhawk rally.
