WASHINGTON, D.C. – USC lacrosse senior All-American midfielder Kerrigan Miller (Bayport, N.Y.) and junior All-Pac-12 goalie Riley Hertford (Lake Oswego, Ore.) were each named to the official 2020 Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Thursday, Feb. 13, by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
The 2020 Tewaaraton Award men's and women's watch lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the Tewaaraton Award. 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the Award.
"As we head into our 20th anniversary, we couldn't be more excited to watch these talented players this season and see who rises to the top in May," said Jeff Harvey, chairman of The Tewaaraton Foundation. "The Tewaaraton Foundation has accomplished a lot in 20 years, and we're extremely thankful for our dedicated board members and hard-working volunteers who have done so much to build and grow this award."
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 12 and April 2. On April 23, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players from the watch lists or not from the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 7 and will be invited to attend the 20th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 28.
Several Trojans have advanced to be named to the list of Tewaaraton Award nominees. Most recently, three-time All-American Michaela Michael received nominee status in 2017. Michael and All-American midfielder Amanda Johansen were the first two Trojans ever to be named to the Tewaaraton Award's watch list at the beginning of 2016. Michael and All-American defender Courtney Tarleton were each named nominees at the end of that 2016 season. Michael, junior defender Lydia Sutton and junior goalie Gussie Johns were each on the 2017 watch list. Johns and Sutton were on the initial 2018 watch list and were later joined by Miller, who is on the official watch list for the third consecutive year.
No. 16-ranked USC (1-0) defeated Hofstra by a one-goal margin, 9-8, to open the 2020 campaign. The Women of Troy now return to McAlister Field to host No. 9 Michigan (1-0) on Saturday, Feb. 15, for a noon PT first draw.
USC won the 2019 Pac-12 regular-season crown with a 9-1 league mark and went 16-4 overall. The Trojans won the Pac-12 tournament for the program's third league crown following MPSF championships in 2016 and '17. Head coach Lindsey Munday, a two-time World Champion, was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year. Miller was awarded the Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year honor for the second season in a row and was chosen to the IWLCA's All-America second team. USC received its fourth NCAA bid and faced Denver in the first round but fell in a narrow 11-10 overtime decision to the Pioneers.

ABOUT THE TEWAARATON FOUNDATION
Founded at the University Club of Washington, DC and first presented in 2001, the Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. Endorsed by the Mohawk Nation Council of Elders and U.S. Lacrosse, the Tewaaraton Award symbolizes lacrosse's centuries-old roots in Native American heritage. The Tewaaraton Foundation ensures the integrity and advances the mission of this award. Each year, the Tewaaraton Award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois Confederacy – the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora – and presents two scholarships to students of Native American descent.
