Readers of Troy Recap
January 27, 2020 | Trojan Outreach, Features
Trojan Outreach traveled to various schools throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District to increase elementary students' interest in reading. The instructions were simple: the elementary schools would encourage their students to read as much as possible, keeping track using reading logs, and the winner got a renovated, USC-themed library for their school.
USC student-athletes were eager to get involved and share their educational childhood stories with students at participating schools. John Thomas, Drew Richmond, Mecca McGlaston and Michael Pittman Jr. were just a few of the student-athletes that came out to interact with the children.
Each group of students varied based on the school. The Readers of Troy assemblies usually had anywhere from 165-250 students in attendance. All of which were generally shouting with excitement throughout the entirety of the assembly.
The excitement was reciprocated by each athlete that came along to one of the LAUSD schools. They each echoed similar sentiments that it was a privilege to be able to inspire kids that they once were in the same position as.
These schools were usually in lower-income areas and were seen as generally overlooked when it comes to funding. Trojan Outreach wanted to be sure to do its part to improve living situations and educations expectations.
The entire Trojan Outreach team is ecstatic to continue to give back and have positive impacts on as many lives as possible through Readers of Troy.
