USC Falls 8-3 in Series Opener to No. 2 Stanford
May 03, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team grabbed an early lead against the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal, but couldn't keep up the pace, falling 8-3 in the series opener at home.
The Trojans drop to 19-23-1 overall and 8-10-1 in Pac-12 play, while Stanford maintains its hold on the top spot in the conference standings with a 33-7 overall record and 16-3 Pac-12 mark.
USC answered a run from the Cardinal in the first with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but that was it for the offense for the rest of the day. CJ Stubbs tied the game with an RBI single and then Ben Ramirez drove in two runs with a triple down the right field line.
Stanford would come back and tie the game on a two-run single by Nick Bellafronto in the top of the second and then took the lead for good on a two-run homer by Andrew Daschbach in the third. The visiting Cardinal would add a run in each of the final three innings to seal the win.
Connor Lunn took his first loss since March 22, battling through 6.0 innings in the start. Brendan Beck went 5.0 innings for Stanford and picked up the win.
