Long Ball Sinks Trojans at No. 12 Oregon State
May 24, 2019 | Baseball, Features
CORVALLIS, Ore. – With the wind blowing out to left, No. 12 Oregon State used a trio of homers to down the USC baseball team, 5-2, on Friday night in Corvallis.
The Trojans fall to 24-29-1 overall and 12-15-1 in Pac-12 play with the loss, and OSU improves to 36-17-1 overall and 21-7 in conference action.
USC loaded the bases in the first and scored a run on a sacrifice fly by CJ Stubbs. The Beavers answered with homers in the first, third and fourth, however, taking a 5-1 lead. Adley Rutschman hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, Beau Philip a solo-shot in the third and then Zack Zalesky a two-run homer in the fourth.
Brandon Perez would answer with a solo-home run in the fifth to make it 5-2, but that was it for the USC offense on the day. The Trojans got two runners on in the ninth, but a double play ended the game.
Connor Lunn had a solid outing despite the three long balls, striking out a career-high 10 batters and walking just one. Six of the final nine outs he recorded after the third homer came via the strikeout. Carson Lambert came in to relieve the Trojan ace to start the seventh. He tossed two scoreless innings, stranding runners on second and third in the eighth.
