Trojans Take Series With 5-0 Win at No. 12 Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The USC baseball team shut out the No. 12 Oregon State Beavers for the second time in three days, picking up a 5-0 win behind dominant pitching from Kyle Hurt and Chris Clarke.
Hurt tossed seven scoreless innings and Clarke came in for the six-out save as the Trojans finish the season 25-29-1 overall and 13-15-1 in Pac-12 play. Oregon State finishes the regular season 36-18-1 overall and 21-8 in conference action. It was the Trojans' first series win in Corvallis since 2011.
USC manufactured its first run of the game in the second inning when Clay Owens walked to lead off the inning, advanced on a single and then a grounder, and finally scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Ramirez. The Trojans would add a run in the sixth, getting a double from Blake Sabol and then an RBI single from Matthew Acosta.
The Trojans added three insurance runs in the ninth, getting a squeeze bunt from CJ Stubbs, RBI double from Ramirez and run-scoring single from Brandon Perez.
The three insurance runs came after a tense bottom of the eighth, that saw Clarke walk the first two batters and OSU get runners to second and third with one out. He struck out the Beavers' Zack Zalesky and then had to stay warm during a lengthy argument that saw two OSU coaches ejected. Clarke then proceeded to strike out Tyler Malone looking to end the inning and fire up the USC dugout.
Clarke worked around a two-out double to end the game and pick up his second save of the week, eighth of the season.
Hurt was one off his career high with nine strikeouts in the game and scattered four hits. He stranded runners in scoring position three times, including after a leadoff double in the sixth inning.
