USC Arms Dominant in 2-0 Win at No. 12 Oregon State
May 23, 2019 | Baseball, Features
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The USC baseball team shut out No. 12 Oregon State 2-0 behind seven scoreless innings from John Beller on Thursday night to open a three-game series in Corvallis.
Beller held the Beavers in check through seven and then handed it off to Chandler Champlain and Chris Clarke who retired the final six batters in order to end the game. USC moves to 24-28-1 overall and 12-14-1 in Pac-12 play, while OSU falls to 35-17-1 overall and 20-7 in conference action.
USC took advantage of an OSU error to get a runner on third in the second inning, and then Tyler Pritchard singled home the Trojans' first run of the game. USC again made the most of a Beaver error that extended the fifth inning, getting an RBI single from Matthew Acosta.
Beller worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third, getting a strikeout and then a popup to end the threat. The lefty would also strand a runner in scoring position in the fifth after a leadoff double and worked around a two-out single in his final inning of work.
Champlain got a groundout and two fly balls to toss a perfect eighth and Clarke got a strikeout, fly ball and grounder to pick up his seventh save of the year. Brady Shockey helped preserve the shutout with a highlight-reel catch in the ninth, robbing a homer from OSU's Zack Zalesky.
